Authorities in South Carolina have arrested a woman after eight young children were discovered alone inside an apartment that caught fire, raising serious concerns about their safety and supervision.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon at the Arbor Square Apartments in North Charleston. According to reports from local station WCSC, firefighters and police rushed to the scene around 2:30 p.m. after receiving a call about a structure fire inside one of the apartment units.

When emergency crews arrived, they made a troubling discovery: eight children were inside the apartment without any adult supervision.

Firefighters were able to quickly bring the flames under control and ensure the children were safely evacuated. Fortunately, officials said none of the children were injured during the incident.

Not long after the fire was contained, a woman identified as 29-year-old Janaina Ferreira arrived at the apartment with several other children. Police soon began investigating the circumstances surrounding the situation.

Authorities later determined that Ferreira had allegedly been running an unlicensed daycare operation out of the apartment, according to statements from the North Charleston Police Department.

Investigators say she left the eight children alone inside the residence before the fire started.

Police spokesperson Harve Jacobs said officers began contacting the parents of the children involved to inform them of the situation. The South Carolina Department of Social Services was also notified and is now involved in the case as officials assess the welfare of the children.

Ferreira was taken into custody and charged with eight counts of unlawful conduct toward a child—one charge for each child left inside the apartment.

She was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center as authorities continue to investigate both the circumstances surrounding the alleged daycare operation and the cause of the fire itself.

While the blaze was extinguished before it could spread further, the incident has sparked concerns about unlicensed childcare operations and the risks they can pose when proper safety and supervision standards are not followed.

Officials have not released additional details about the ages of the children or how long they had been left alone before emergency responders arrived.

For many parents, the case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of verifying childcare arrangements and ensuring caregivers are properly licensed and supervised.

As investigators continue examining what led to the fire, authorities say their primary focus remains the safety and well-being of the children involved.
