A Kentucky community that spent more than a day hoping for a miracle is now mourning the loss of a young girl whose disappearance triggered an intense search effort.

Nine-year-old Jenny Din of Florence, Kentucky, was found dead Saturday evening in a pond not far from her home after authorities and volunteers spent more than 25 hours searching the area. According to reports from local outlet FOX19 and other sources, her body was discovered around 7:30 p.m. by members of the Hamilton County Water Search and Rescue team.

Jenny had been reported missing Friday evening after she was last seen walking along a residential street near her neighborhood. Authorities said she was spotted around 5:30 p.m. on MacIntosh Lane heading toward Afton Drive. At the time, she was wearing a mint-colored jacket and pink headphones—but notably had no shoes.

Her disappearance quickly sparked a massive search effort.

Law enforcement agencies from multiple counties joined forces with volunteers to comb the area surrounding her home. Investigators said teams covered roughly two square miles on foot while aerial searches using drones and a Kentucky State Police helicopter scanned several more miles from the air. K-9 units also searched large sections of the community.

Despite the widespread effort, Jenny was not immediately located.

Authorities later confirmed that the pond where she was eventually found had been searched earlier in the investigation. However, she was not discovered at that time. The Hamilton County underwater search and recovery team ultimately located her body during a renewed search of the water Saturday evening.

Officials have not yet released details about the circumstances surrounding her death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Jenny’s disappearance was especially concerning because she was non-verbal and had autism, according to information shared during the search. Family members and authorities feared she may have wandered away from home, prompting urgent calls for the public’s help as search efforts intensified.

As the search unfolded, community members and emergency crews worked through the night and into the following day, hoping to bring Jenny home safely.

Instead, the discovery has left residents devastated.

Authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, but investigators say they continue to review the circumstances surrounding Jenny’s disappearance. The case has been transferred to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division as officials work to determine exactly what happened.

For now, the focus remains on supporting Jenny’s family and understanding how such a tragedy occurred so close to home.

Anyone who may have information related to the case is being urged to contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line as investigators continue their work.
