A Florida community is grieving after a devastating hit-and-run crash claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy and left another child seriously injured. The case has drawn national attention not only for the tragic circumstances but also for the unusual reaction of the driver during her first court appearance.

Victoria Johnson, 30, appeared before a judge via video conference after being arrested in connection with the crash that happened Wednesday evening in Winter Haven, Florida. According to details reported by the New York Post and local authorities, Johnson faces multiple charges related to the incident, including leaving the scene of a crash involving death and serious bodily injury.

The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. near Faith Baptist Church, where a celebration had been held for the pastor’s 50th birthday. After the evening service, several children reportedly crossed the street to get cupcakes and other treats when they were struck by an SUV.

An 8-year-old boy died from his injuries. A 10-year-old who was hit alongside him suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull, a broken femur, and a broken arm. As of Friday, the older child was being treated at a hospital and remained in critical but stable condition.

The emotional impact of the tragedy has been especially profound at the victim’s school. Officials from Boswell Elementary described the young boy as kind-hearted and widely loved by classmates and teachers.

“He had an incredible spirit and smile,” a school spokesperson said, adding that the entire school community is mourning the loss.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s behavior during her court hearing quickly drew attention. Video from the proceeding shows her reacting with visible shock as the judge read the charges and bond amounts totaling $100,000. Over the course of just a few minutes, she appeared to shift between disbelief, laughter, anger, and tears.

At one point during the hearing, Johnson interrupted proceedings to insist she had not been driving the vehicle. A court official quickly warned her not to discuss the case.

Investigators say Johnson initially tried to distance herself from the crash. According to police, she first reported her vehicle—a dark blue 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe—stolen. But detectives soon discovered the SUV had significant damage and possible biological evidence.

Authorities say Johnson later admitted she had been driving the vehicle that night even though her license had been suspended.

She also reportedly told deputies she had been using methamphetamine before getting behind the wheel. According to investigators, Johnson said she believed she might have hit someone but could not clearly remember the crash.

Police say she later asked an acquaintance to dispose of the vehicle. The SUV was eventually located when deputies spotted it being driven by a man later identified as Charles Cory Stewart.

Stewart and another passenger were later arrested after allegedly refusing to cooperate with police.

As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on remembering the young boy whose life was cut tragically short—and supporting the injured child still fighting to recover.
