A quiet Massachusetts community is reeling after a shocking and seemingly random act of violence left a beloved ICU nurse dead and an 18-year-old high school student facing murder charges.

Authorities say the incident unfolded in Danvers, a town about 25 miles north of Boston, when a teenage suspect allegedly broke into a home late Wednesday night and fatally stabbed a woman while she slept. The victim, 68-year-old Janet Swallow, was a longtime intensive care nurse known for her dedication to patients and colleagues.

According to details reported by the New York Post and other local outlets, the suspect—identified as Anthony DeMayo, a senior at Bishop Fenwick High School—later told police he had wanted to kill someone “for a long time.” Investigators say his comments suggest the attack was planned rather than spontaneous.

Prosecutors allege that DeMayo spent the evening driving through several nearby communities before arriving at Swallow’s home. Court documents indicate he broke in through a window and attacked her in her bedroom, stabbing her multiple times. Authorities believe the victim and the suspect had no prior connection.

The violence might not have come to light as quickly if not for strange behavior reported the following day.

Residents in the neighborhood contacted police after spotting a young man outside behaving erratically while holding a knife. Witnesses told dispatchers he appeared to be swinging the blade and stabbing bushes, as if practicing or acting out a violent scenario. One caller reportedly described the scene as disturbing and surreal.

When officers arrived, prosecutors say the teen made a chilling statement—telling them he had killed a woman the previous night.

Police then searched his home in nearby Lynn, where investigators reportedly discovered clothing stained with blood. Evidence from his cellphone also led officers to conduct a welfare check at Swallow’s residence. There, authorities found the veteran nurse dead from multiple stab wounds.

Officials say there is no indication that robbery played a role in the crime and that DeMayo appears to have acted alone. The randomness of the attack has left residents and investigators struggling to comprehend the tragedy.

“This is just a very difficult case because of the randomness of this violence,” Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said, according to local reports.

For those who knew Janet Swallow, the loss is especially painful. Colleagues at Lahey Hospital in Burlington described her as a compassionate and valued nurse who spent years caring for critically ill patients. Hospital leadership said she will be “greatly missed,” offering condolences to her family, friends, and coworkers.

Swallow, a mother of two sons, had built a reputation not only as a skilled nurse but as someone deeply committed to helping others.

Meanwhile, the suspect appeared in court Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and home invasion. A judge ordered him held without bail at Bridgewater State Hospital while he undergoes a mental health evaluation.

His Roman Catholic high school has reportedly begun offering counseling services for students as the community grapples with the shocking case.

For Danvers residents, the tragedy has left a lingering sense of disbelief—raising difficult questions about how such violence could erupt without warning.
