A reported warning about a potential Iranian drone threat against California is sparking strong reactions within Los Angeles’ large Iranian American community — with activists saying the development should serve as a serious reminder that global conflicts can have consequences much closer to home.

According to reporting published Thursday, an FBI alert circulated to law enforcement earlier this year warned that Iran could attempt a surprise drone attack launched from a vessel off the U.S. coast if tensions escalated following American military strikes against the country. The alert did not specify a precise target but referenced possible threats within California.

For many Iranian American activists in Los Angeles — home to one of the largest Iranian diasporas in the world — the warning underscores the broader stakes of the conflict.

Foreign policy analyst Lisa Daftari, who specializes in Middle Eastern affairs and counterterrorism, said the situation highlights how geopolitical tensions are not just distant international disputes.

“I think it’s a wake-up call,” Daftari said, suggesting that threats linked to Iran demonstrate that the conflict can extend beyond regional politics into issues affecting American homeland security.

The Los Angeles area, particularly neighborhoods like Westwood’s “Tehrangeles,” has long served as a hub for Iranian Americans, including many who oppose the Iranian government. Community demonstrations and activism have intensified in recent years, especially following political upheaval inside Iran.

Despite the reported threat, activists say the possibility of retaliation has not weakened their resolve.

“We’re going to continue to fight,” said activist Arezo Rashidian, who helps organize demonstrations in Los Angeles. Rashidian suggested that intimidation tactics are not new for Iranian dissidents and said protesters remain determined to keep speaking out.

Many activists believe the warnings could be connected to their visible demonstrations and criticism of Iran’s leadership. Some say threats, both online and offline, have been part of their experience for years.

Daftari echoed that sentiment, noting that she has personally faced threats during her career analyzing the Iranian government and its global influence. Still, she said members of the community remain vigilant and are cooperating with law enforcement to report suspicious activity.

California is home to an estimated half-million Iranian dissidents, making it the largest concentration in the United States. While officials have not confirmed that the community itself would be a target, the presence of such a large diaspora has added to concerns.

For many activists, however, the message remains clear: the warning may be serious, but they say it will not silence their efforts.

Instead, they see it as yet another reminder of why they continue to speak out.
