An Olympic champion surprised President Donald Trump with an unusual honor during a Women’s History Month celebration at the White House, turning a routine event into a memorable moment that quickly drew attention.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. bobsled star Kaillie Humphries presented Trump with the Order of Ikkos medal, a prestigious award typically given by American Olympic medalists to someone who played a meaningful role in helping them reach the podium.

The moment took place Thursday during a ceremony highlighting women’s achievements, where Humphries stepped forward to explain the significance of the award.

“Every Olympic medalist in the United States receives an Order of Ikkos medal to give to someone who helped them along their journey,” Humphries said, noting that Olympic success is never achieved alone.

Then she surprised the audience by announcing that she had chosen Trump as the recipient.

“I’m honored to present my Order of Ikkos medal to you, Donald Trump,” she said.

According to reporting on the event, Humphries believes Trump may be the first sitting or former U.S. president to receive the award. Named after Ikkos, an ancient Greek coach considered one of the earliest recorded athletic trainers, the medal is often given to coaches, mentors, or supporters who helped athletes reach Olympic success.

Humphries said her decision was influenced by policies she believes have impacted women athletes and families, particularly Trump’s stance on protecting women’s sports and expanding access to in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The athlete shared that she became a mother in 2024 after a two-and-a-half-year IVF journey, a process she described as emotionally challenging. Many people, she said, doubted she would ever return to elite competition afterward.

Yet she went on to win two bronze medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, proving critics wrong.

Trump appeared pleased by the surprise recognition, joking with the audience, “Wow! I knew I liked her!”

The award ceremony took place as part of a broader White House event celebrating women’s contributions across industries and communities. First Lady Melania Trump, who introduced the president, spoke about the important role women play in shaping families, communities, and the nation’s future.

During the event, several women also shared personal stories about how policies from the Trump administration had affected their lives. A North Carolina single mother discussed tax savings she experienced, while a Maryland steelworker credited manufacturing initiatives for helping her land a stable career. A Virginia farmer and a Florida sheriff also highlighted changes they said benefited their work and communities.

As referenced in the original news report, the ceremony combined policy messaging with personal recognition — culminating in the rare moment when an Olympic champion handed a presidential figure a medal usually reserved for mentors and coaches.

For Humphries, the gesture was simple: a way to thank someone she believes played a role in supporting opportunities for women like her.
