Nearly a decade after a scandal that made headlines nationwide, the former Texas teacher whose smiling mugshot went viral is reportedly still married to her husband — a surprising detail that has drawn renewed attention to the controversial case.
Sarah Fowlkes, now 35, first gained widespread notoriety in 2017 when she was arrested and charged over an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student at Lockhart High School. Her case quickly became one of the most widely discussed teacher misconduct scandals of the time, in part because of the unusual booking photo in which she appeared smiling broadly.
According to reports highlighted in the New York Post and Daily Mail, Fowlkes ultimately pleaded guilty in the case. She served 10 days in jail and was sentenced to four years of probation following the conviction.
Despite the public fallout and legal consequences, recent reports suggest her marriage to husband Hayden Fowlkes has endured, nearly ten years after the scandal erupted.

The renewed attention comes after older police documents resurfaced detailing aspects of the case that were not widely discussed at the time. According to those records, investigators said Fowlkes exchanged messages with the student through social media platforms, including Snapchat. Authorities also alleged that explicit photos were sent during their communications.
Reports indicate the two also used nicknames for each other in messages, a detail that investigators cited as part of the evidence in the case.
The resurfaced records also referenced statements from a colleague who reportedly told police that Fowlkes had been open about being unfaithful to her husband in the past. Those claims, however, were part of the investigative file and not the basis of the criminal charges.
Following the scandal, Fowlkes left the teaching profession entirely. According to recent reports, she has since transitioned into a career in marketing and has even received recognition for her work in that field.
Attempts by reporters to contact Fowlkes and her husband for comment were reportedly unsuccessful.
The case continues to draw attention years later largely because of the viral mugshot that first propelled the story across social media and national headlines.
While the legal case concluded long ago, the story remains a reminder of how incidents involving educators and students can have lasting personal and public consequences, even many years after the initial headlines fade.
