A quiet Florida neighborhood is reeling after authorities say a woman stabbed her elderly roommate to death, covered his body with a tarp and fled the scene in his pickup truck.
Shannon Rose Giblin, 48, has been charged with second-degree murder and grand theft of a motor vehicle following the death of 76-year-old military veteran Paul De Wayne Bradley in Punta Gorda.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Bradley’s home Sunday after receiving a report of a person who was not breathing.
When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered Bradley dead inside the home. Investigators said he was already “deceased and beyond help” when emergency responders arrived.
During the investigation, deputies quickly realized Bradley’s pickup truck was missing from the property.
Authorities tracked the vehicle to neighboring Sarasota County, where they located Giblin with the truck and took her into custody.
During questioning, investigators say Giblin admitted to stabbing Bradley following an argument inside the home.
“After realizing that the victim was beyond help, Giblin then covered Bradley with a tarp and left the scene in the victim’s pickup truck,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Giblin was arrested and booked into jail, where she is currently being held without bond.
The violent death has stunned residents of Charlotte Ranchettes, the rural neighborhood where Bradley lived.
Neighbors described Bradley as a kind, generous man who was well known in the community and always willing to lend a hand.
“He was a veteran. He went through wars and came back, he survived a heart attack not long ago, and then this is what takes his life,” neighbor Jody Scharping told local outlet WINK News. “Nobody deserves that.”
Bradley had lived in the home with his wife for many years before she passed away several years ago, neighbors said.
More recently, he had allowed a woman to move into the house to help him with daily tasks around the property.
According to people who knew him, the arrangement had only begun about a week before the deadly confrontation.
Bradley’s friend Adam LaFleur told Gulf Coast News that Giblin had claimed she worked as an at-home caregiver.
But according to LaFleur, problems with the arrangement appeared almost immediately.
“Within two or three days, she started doing some strange things,” LaFleur said. “She lied to him about a few things. He caught that right away.”
Neighbors believe Bradley had decided to evict Giblin shortly before the fatal argument occurred.
“From my understanding, things weren’t going really well,” Scharping said. “He was gonna evict her that day, and then that happened.”
Friends say Bradley was widely respected in the neighborhood and known for his kindness toward others.

Parker Daigle, who said Bradley mentored him and often spent time working with him around the property, described the victim as someone who was generous and caring.
“He was a super nice guy,” Daigle said. “Always bought me lunch. I worked with him a lot. I helped him clean out all the sheds.”
“Nobody hated him,” he added. “He was just a super nice dude. I didn’t think anybody would ever do that to him.”
In a statement provided to Gulf Coast News, members of Giblin’s family expressed sorrow over the tragedy and apologized to Bradley’s loved ones.
“Our hearts are deeply saddened by this inconceivable tragedy,” the statement read in part. “We can only imagine the pain you’re feeling. We are so very sorry.”
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation into Bradley’s death remains ongoing.
