A Baltimore school community is mourning the sudden loss of a longtime educator after a 75-year-old math teacher was found dead inside an elementary school building, according to local officials.

The teacher, Deborah Tolson, worked as a math interventionist at Arundel Elementary School in Baltimore and had spent decades helping students strengthen their math skills. School administrators confirmed that Tolson was discovered inside the school over the weekend, a situation that quickly prompted a response from local authorities.

Police said there were no signs of trauma or foul play, but the circumstances surrounding her death remain under review while the state medical examiner determines the official cause, according to reports highlighted by the New York Post.

Tolson had dedicated much of her life to education. She spent 23 years teaching within Baltimore City Public Schools and had been part of the Arundel Elementary community for the past seven years. During that time, school leaders say she became a deeply respected and cherished presence among both students and staff.

In a message to the school community, Principal Kerry-Ann Malcolm described Tolson as a “beloved member of the school community” and someone who had a meaningful impact on generations of children.

“She was a pillar of the school community,” Malcolm wrote, noting that Tolson’s kindness and commitment made her especially admired by students and colleagues alike.

The discovery of Tolson’s body understandably shook the school community. As a precaution and to give students and staff time to process the loss, students were dismissed early Monday morning.

District officials also arranged for crisis counselors to be available on campus to help students and faculty cope with the sudden tragedy.

“Our hearts and thoughts remain with Ms. Tolson’s family and friends,” Malcolm wrote in the statement, emphasizing that the district will continue supporting the school community during this difficult time.

Authorities have not yet clarified exactly when Tolson was found or whether students were present in the building at the time.

For now, investigators say they are waiting for the medical examiner’s findings, which will determine the cause of death and provide more clarity about what happened.

Meanwhile, colleagues and students are remembering Tolson as a dedicated educator whose work helped shape the lives of many young learners.

As the school community mourns her passing, officials say they remain focused on honoring her legacy and supporting those affected by the loss.
