A disabled woman was allegedly held captive for five years inside a luxury Houston-area home — surviving on as little as a single egg a day — before a desperate and brief 911 call finally exposed the situation, according to investigators.
James Earl Johnson, 46, has been arrested and charged with injury to a disabled individual and abandoning or endangering a disabled person after authorities say he kept his wife locked inside a bedroom of their Clear Lake home for years.
According to Harris County court documents, the woman had little access to food, medical care, or communication with the outside world during the alleged captivity.
Investigators say the victim was confined inside a bedroom in the couple’s 6,783-square-foot home on Crown Ridge Court — a property valued at roughly $1 million.
Authorities allege Johnson controlled nearly every aspect of the woman’s life.
Court records say she had no phone and limited access to food, sometimes surviving on just one egg a day. Occasionally, Johnson would bring her dinner, investigators said.
The ordeal only came to light Friday morning after Johnson reportedly made a mistake.
According to prosecutors, he accidentally left his phone on a nightstand inside the bedroom.
Seizing the rare opportunity, the woman attempted to call 911.
But the call was cut short.
Court documents state that Johnson allegedly discovered what was happening, slapped the woman, carried her back to the bed and disconnected the call with the dispatcher before police could intervene.
Despite the interruption, authorities were eventually able to respond and rescue the victim.
She was taken to a hospital and remained hospitalized as of Monday, according to family members. Details about her condition and the nature of her disability have not been publicly released.
The woman’s adult son told local outlet KTRK that she was still receiving medical care but did not elaborate further.
Neighbors in the quiet Clear Lake community told reporters they had no idea a woman was allegedly being held captive inside the massive five-bedroom, eight-bathroom house.
Investigators say the victim had previously tried to alert authorities.

Court documents show that police were called to the home on November 16. But when officers arrived, the woman reportedly told them she and her children had been instructed not to speak to police.
Officers left the property without filing a report.
Records also show the victim had filed family court cases against Johnson more than two decades ago in 2001 and 2002 related to child support, though those records remain sealed.
According to property records, Johnson purchased the home in 2015 and had lived there with his wife for at least six years.
Authorities say Johnson works as a full-time master electrician and earns approximately $18,000 per month.
Despite the serious allegations, Johnson was released from jail after posting a $50,000 bond.
A judge ordered him to stay away from both the victim and the home on Crown Ridge Court while the case proceeds.
If convicted on the charges, Johnson could face up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
