What first appeared to investigators as a tragic suicide inside a parked vehicle has now turned into a murder case — and the victim’s wife is behind bars.
Breyanai Moore, 31, was arrested Wednesday, March 4, in connection with the 2025 shooting death of her husband, 33-year-old Lonnie Moore, according to authorities in Montgomery County, Texas.
Lonnie Moore was discovered dead inside a vehicle on June 15, 2025, in the 23000 block of Northcrest Trail in New Caney. Deputies responding to the scene around 9 a.m. found the car parked with the engine still running.
Inside was Lonnie Moore, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
At first glance, investigators believed the case could be a suicide.
But something about the scene raised questions.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, detectives conducted a detailed analysis of the evidence and began to notice inconsistencies.
“While the scene initially appeared to suggest a suicide,” investigators wrote in a statement, detectives continued examining the evidence and interviewing people connected to the case.
“As the investigation progressed, evidence was uncovered that contradicted the initial assessment of a self-inflicted wound.”
Over the next nine months, detectives slowly reconstructed what they now believe happened in the hours before Lonnie Moore was killed.
Court documents obtained by PEOPLE reveal that Breyanai Moore told investigators she had been at home with the couple’s 5-year-old daughter throughout the night.
But detectives uncovered other information that challenged that account.
According to the documents, Breyanai had texted her husband that morning telling him she planned to file for divorce.
That message would become a key piece of the timeline investigators were building.
Another major development came when a friend of Breyanai Moore spoke with investigators.
The friend allegedly told authorities that Breyanai had privately admitted to shooting her husband.
According to the witness, Breyanai claimed Lonnie had picked her up in his vehicle and that she shot him from the back seat.
Investigators also interviewed Breyanai Moore’s mother during the months-long probe.
According to court records, the mother told detectives that her daughter “hated” Lonnie Moore. She also said Breyanai appeared devastated after his death — crying frequently and losing weight in the weeks that followed.
Detectives continued gathering evidence until they felt they had enough to present the case to a judge.

After the nine-month investigation, Breyanai Moore was officially identified as a suspect in the killing.
An arrest warrant was issued, and deputies took her into custody on March 4.
She was booked into the Montgomery County Jail, where she is currently being held without bond.
Authorities have not publicly detailed a motive beyond the reported divorce message sent hours before the shooting.
