A heartbreaking case involving a missing Alabama toddler has taken a grim turn after authorities announced that the child’s mother is now facing capital murder and corpse abuse charges in connection with the girl’s death.

According to police in Enterprise, Alabama, 33-year-old Adrienne Reid has been charged in the death of her daughter, Genesis Nova Reid, who would have celebrated her third birthday on March 9 — the same day prosecutors revealed the new charges. Reid is currently being held without bond at the Coffee County Jail as the investigation continues.

Police believe the crime occurred on Christmas Day 2025, shortly after Reid and her daughter returned home from visiting relatives in nearby Dothan. Enterprise Police Chief Michael Moore said investigators determined that Genesis was allegedly killed by her mother and later placed inside a duffel bag that was thrown into a dumpster at an apartment complex on Apache Drive.

Authorities say surveillance video from a nearby home played a crucial role in the investigation. The footage reportedly shows Reid walking toward the dumpster with a rolling duffel bag around 11:30 p.m., then returning later carrying the child’s toys.

Investigators say the disturbing discovery came after weeks of investigating the toddler’s disappearance. Reid initially told police that she awoke around 3 a.m. on February 16 to find her daughter missing, claiming the front door of their apartment was open and Genesis had vanished.

However, detectives soon began to suspect the story was fabricated. Reid was initially arrested and charged with false reporting to law enforcement, but authorities say the investigation uncovered evidence pointing to a far more serious crime.

“Through the careful and methodical work of investigators, we have reached the heartbreaking conclusion that the person responsible was the one who should have protected her,” Chief Moore said during a press conference, according to a report by WDHN News (Everett, WDHN, March 9, 2026).

Despite the charges, Genesis’s body has not yet been recovered. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have been searching the Coffee County Landfill since mid-February in hopes of locating the child’s remains. Officials say the search area has now been narrowed to a small section of the landfill.

Authorities are bringing in specialized search teams from Atlanta that use advanced technology designed for landfill recovery operations.

Coffee County District Attorney James Tarbox said prosecutors plan to pursue the death penalty in the case. He also accused Reid of conducting a lengthy effort to mislead investigators after the child’s death.

Meanwhile, officials say the search for Genesis will continue.

“We are determined to find her,” Sheriff Scott Byrd said, emphasizing that investigators remain committed to bringing closure to the tragic case.

Reid is expected to make her first court appearance later this week as the legal process begins.
