Authorities in Phoenix are investigating after a woman was found dead along a canal bank early Saturday morning, though officials say there is currently no evidence linking the case to the ongoing disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.

Police were called to the area near 27th Place and the Grand Canal Trail around 7:40 a.m. on March 7 after receiving a report of an unresponsive woman near the waterway. When officers arrived, they discovered an adult female on the canal bank. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from Phoenix police.

Investigators have not yet released the woman’s identity or additional details about what may have led to her death. Authorities say the case remains under investigation as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

Because of the heightened public attention surrounding the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, some observers quickly questioned whether the cases could be connected. Nancy Guthrie went missing from her home near Tucson, Arizona, on February 1, launching a large search effort and drawing national media attention.

However, officials in Pima County, where Guthrie was last seen, say they have not been informed of any connection between the Phoenix canal case and the missing-person investigation. According to a report cited by Yahoo News, law enforcement officials confirmed they had not received any indication that the two incidents are related .

Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has remained a mystery for more than a month. Authorities previously revealed that surveillance footage from her home showed an armed individual tampering with a security camera at her front door on the night she vanished. The troubling detail has fueled speculation that the disappearance may involve foul play.

Investigators have also been examining other potential clues from that evening. NewsNation reporter Brian Entin recently reported that the FBI is reviewing a possible internet outage that occurred around the time Guthrie went missing. Additionally, data from a neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera reportedly became unavailable during that time period, adding another layer of mystery to the case.

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have been publicly appealing for help in finding their mother. Over the past several weeks, they have shared emotional messages online urging anyone with information to come forward and assist investigators.

As authorities continue to investigate both situations, officials stress that the identity of the woman found in Phoenix has not yet been confirmed and that no connection has been established to the Guthrie case.

For now, the discovery raises new questions but offers no clear answers in the search for Nancy Guthrie.
