Kai Trump, the teenage granddaughter of President Donald Trump, is facing backlash online after posting a video in which she filmed herself taking Secret Service agents on a luxury shopping trip to one of Los Angeles’ most expensive grocery stores.
The 20-minute YouTube video, titled “I Brought My Secret Service to Erewhon,” shows the young social media influencer strolling through the upscale grocery chain while joking about the extreme prices of the products.
“Alright, guys, well, welcome back to the channel,” Kai begins in the video. “Right now we are in Erewhon, which is in LA. This is going to be an Erewhon video.”
Erewhon has become famous online for its luxury grocery items, including smoothies, prepared meals and specialty products that often carry eye-popping price tags.
“Erewhon is the most expensive grocery store, pretty much out there,” Kai tells viewers in the video. “Everything’s crazy expensive.”
During the trip, she jokes that the shopping spree might be so costly it could lead to financial ruin.
“I might have to file for bankruptcy after this,” she says while browsing the store.
The video also references the Secret Service agents assigned to protect her as the granddaughter of the president. At several points, Kai mentions that the agents accompanied her into the store during the shopping trip.
While the video appears to be intended as a lighthearted influencer vlog, it quickly sparked criticism online after clips began circulating on social media.
Critics accused the president’s granddaughter of appearing out of touch while the United States faces growing international tensions and rising economic concerns.
The criticism intensified as the video circulated at the same time the conflict between the United States and Iran — launched under the Trump administration — was driving anxiety about rising fuel prices and potential military escalation.
Gas prices in several states have climbed above $3 per gallon amid the conflict, adding to broader concerns about the economic impact of the hostilities.
Some social media users responded harshly to the video, accusing Kai of flaunting wealth and privilege while many Americans worry about the cost of living and the possibility of military conflict.
“Time to enlist, girly,” one commenter wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Others echoed similar sentiments.
“Give me a break. Put a uniform on,” wrote Fox News correspondent Tracey Gallagher in response to the viral clip.
The backlash reflects a familiar tension surrounding the online presence of political families in the age of social media, where casual posts can quickly become lightning rods for criticism.
Kai Trump, who has built a growing online following, frequently posts lifestyle content and vlog-style videos documenting aspects of her daily life.
The Erewhon video is the latest example of the influencer-style content she shares with her audience.
But critics argue that the optics of luxury shopping — particularly while accompanied by government security agents — struck many viewers as poorly timed given the current political and economic climate.
Supporters, however, say the video was simply typical social media content from a teenager documenting a day out in Los Angeles.
