More than two decades after the disappearance of Laci Peterson, the case that captivated the nation is once again returning to the spotlight. A new documentary series set to air this summer promises to revisit the tragedy and examine claims of newly surfaced evidence connected to the high-profile investigation.
A&E recently announced a four-hour docuseries titled “Scott Peterson: The New Evidence.” The two-part project will follow efforts by the Los Angeles Innocence Project, a legal advocacy group that has been working to challenge Scott Peterson’s conviction in the deaths of Laci Peterson and the couple’s unborn son, Conner.
Laci Peterson, who was 27 and eight months pregnant, vanished from the Modesto, California, home she shared with her husband on Christmas Eve in 2002. Her disappearance quickly became one of the most widely followed missing-person cases in the country, drawing intense media coverage and widespread public sympathy.
Months later, investigators recovered the bodies of Laci and her unborn child along the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay, leading prosecutors to accuse Scott Peterson of killing his wife before disposing of her body in the water.
During the 2004 trial, prosecutors argued that Scott Peterson strangled or suffocated Laci before placing her body in the bay. Peterson maintained that he had nothing to do with her disappearance and said he had been fishing in Berkeley on the day she went missing.
The jury ultimately found him guilty of murder, and he was sentenced to death the following year.
However, legal battles surrounding the case continued long after the trial ended. In 2020, the California Supreme Court overturned Peterson’s death sentence, citing issues with jury selection during the penalty phase of the trial. A year later, he was resentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The upcoming docuseries focuses on claims made by the Los Angeles Innocence Project, which argues that certain evidence could raise new questions about what happened to Laci Peterson.
One point highlighted by the group involves a burned van discovered near the Petersons’ neighborhood around the time of the crime. According to the organization, the vehicle contained a mattress that could potentially be connected to the case. Advocates have also suggested the possibility that Laci may have witnessed a burglary taking place near her home before she disappeared.
The group believes those details could point investigators toward alternative scenarios surrounding the crime.
Producers say the series will explore those claims and examine whether the information could impact Scott Peterson’s legal fight to overturn his conviction.
Despite the renewed attention, Scott Peterson remains incarcerated at Mule Creek State Prison in California. His conviction for the murders of Laci Peterson and their unborn son still stands.

For many people who followed the heartbreaking case in the early 2000s, Laci Peterson’s story remains the central tragedy — a young mother-to-be whose life ended just weeks before she was expected to welcome her child.
The upcoming series aims to revisit that story while exploring the latest developments in one of America’s most widely debated criminal cases.
