A Kentucky woman is accused of shooting her mother multiple times and then calling 911 to report what she had done.

Brianna Rich, 27, has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of her mother, 50-year-old Carol Rich, inside the home they shared in London, Kentucky.

According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at the residence on the night of March 14, 2025.

The person who called 911 was Brianna Rich herself.

During the call, she reportedly told dispatchers, “I just shot at my mother.”

Local Fox affiliate WDKY reported that Brianna Rich told the dispatcher she fired about five shots after the two women got into a physical altercation.

In the recorded call, she can reportedly be heard desperately trying to help her wounded mother.

“I’m holding blankets on her wounds, and she don’t have a pulse,” Brianna Rich told the dispatcher. “There’s a lot of blood.”

When the dispatcher asked what led to the shooting, Brianna Rich said her mother had attacked her.

“She came at me,” she reportedly said. “Trying to hurt me and choke me. It’s been going on for a while now. I haven’t been able to go out of the house.”

When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Carol Rich outside the home.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed whether investigators believe the shooting was an act of self-defense or a criminal killing, but Brianna Rich was arrested and charged with murder shortly afterward.

The case has shaken the family and revealed troubling details about the relationship between the mother and daughter.

Family members told local CBS affiliate WKYT that Brianna Rich had been living with her mother while trying to deal with a drug problem.

According to relatives, she had been sober for about two years but may have relapsed shortly before the shooting.

Brianna Rich’s older sister, Bridgett Rich, told reporters that violence between the two women had occurred before.

In an interview with WDKY, Bridgett claimed that her sister once tried to stab their mother several years earlier.

According to her account, the attack was stopped by Carol Rich’s boyfriend at the time.

The new allegations have raised serious questions about what may have been happening inside the home before the fatal confrontation.

For now, investigators have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Brianna Rich remains in custody at the Laurel County Correctional Center.

According to WDKY, a judge ordered her to undergo an inpatient competency examination to determine whether she is mentally fit to stand trial.

Her next court hearing has been scheduled for June 1.
