A longtime Alabama attorney is facing a shocking list of felony charges after prosecutors say she repeatedly tried to poison her husband by secretly putting fentanyl in his food and drinks.

Sara Baker, 75, was indicted by a grand jury on 11 criminal counts tied to an alleged plot to kill her husband, James Doyle Baker.

The charges include conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, domestic violence, elder abuse, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and four counts of solicitation to commit a controlled substance crime.

According to the indictment, Baker allegedly attempted to kill her husband on three separate occasions in September 2025.

Prosecutors claim she intentionally tried to cause his death by secretly adding fentanyl — a powerful synthetic opioid — to meals and beverages she served him.

The alleged poisoning attempts took place on Sept. 4, Sept. 12 and Sept. 20, according to court documents.

Despite the alleged attempts, James Baker survived.

However, the indictment says he became physically impaired after consuming the contaminated food and drinks, which led prosecutors to file additional charges of domestic violence and elder abuse.

Authorities also allege Baker obtained or provided fentanyl multiple times as part of the plan.

The indictment includes four solicitation charges tied to alleged efforts to acquire or furnish the drug on the same September dates as the poisoning attempts, as well as a fourth instance on Nov. 25 — the day she was arrested.

Baker was first taken into custody on Nov. 25, 2025, when prosecutors initially charged her with the same 11 offenses outlined in the new indictment.

She posted a $400,000 bond shortly after her arrest and has remained out of jail while awaiting trial.

The case has sent shockwaves through Alabama’s legal community.

Before the allegations surfaced, Baker had spent years working within the justice system.

She previously worked with the Alabama District Attorney’s office and also served as a county attorney.

But her legal career was abruptly halted following her arrest.

On Dec. 4, just over a week after Baker was taken into custody, the Alabama State Bar announced she had been placed on interim suspension from the practice of law.

According to the Bar’s statement, Baker consented to the suspension while the criminal case moves forward.

Prosecutors have not publicly detailed what may have motivated the alleged poisoning attempts.

Nor have they said how investigators first discovered the suspected plot.

Still, the allegations paint a disturbing picture of repeated attempts to secretly poison a spouse with one of the most lethal drugs in circulation.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid many times stronger than heroin or morphine, and even small amounts can be deadly.

Because of its potency, it has been linked to thousands of overdose deaths across the United States in recent years.

In this case, authorities say the drug was allegedly used in an attempt to quietly eliminate a spouse through everyday meals.

Baker has not yet entered a plea in the case.
