A growing controversy is surrounding the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, after a former Arizona SWAT commander publicly criticized the leadership of the local sheriff overseeing the case.
Bob Krygier, a retired lieutenant who spent nearly three decades with the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, spoke out this week about Sheriff Chris Nanos’ handling of the investigation. During a podcast appearance, Krygier questioned Nanos’ communication style and leadership, suggesting it may be hindering public confidence in the case.
Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home on February 1, sparking a high-profile search and a wave of public concern. Authorities have said they are actively pursuing leads, and Nanos recently stated investigators are “definitely closer” to identifying those responsible for her disappearance.
But Krygier says the sheriff’s approach has raised concerns among members of the department. According to the retired commander, a morale survey conducted within the agency several years ago revealed overwhelming dissatisfaction with Nanos’ leadership.
Krygier claimed that roughly 98% of the department’s officers expressed a vote of no confidence in the sheriff during that internal poll, a figure he said reflects deep frustration among law enforcement personnel.
“Think about that number,” Krygier said, emphasizing the size and seriousness of the department. He argued that strong leadership is critical for agencies responsible for public safety and complex investigations.
Krygier also criticized Nanos for allegedly failing to address the concerns raised by officers after the poll was conducted. Instead of engaging with unions or department staff to find solutions, Krygier suggested the issues were largely ignored, which he believes may have contributed to ongoing morale problems.
Meanwhile, the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie continues to weigh heavily on her family and the Tucson community. Savannah Guthrie has been vocal about the emotional toll the ordeal has taken, using social media to ask for continued prayers and support as investigators work to find answers.
A vigil has formed outside Nancy Guthrie’s home, where neighbors and community members have gathered to show solidarity with the family.
As the search continues, the case has drawn national attention, not only because of the connection to a prominent television journalist but also because of questions about how the investigation is being managed.
Officials with the Pima County Sheriff’s Office have not yet publicly responded to Krygier’s remarks.
For now, investigators say they are continuing to follow leads in hopes of locating Nancy Guthrie and determining what happened in the weeks since she disappeared.
