A Louisiana woman has been arrested after police say she repeatedly attempted to abandon her 8-year-old son, leaving him alone in multiple locations — including a cemetery, a farm and a laundromat — before driving away.
Jeanette Edmonds, 43, now faces charges of cruelty to juveniles, child desertion and criminal abandonment, according to the Ponchatoula Police Department.
The case came to light Sunday afternoon when officers responded to a call around 2 p.m. reporting that a young child had been left alone at a local laundromat.
Witnesses told police they saw a woman drop off the boy and then drive away, leaving him behind.
When officers arrived, they found the child alone and without supervision. He was taken to the Ponchatoula Police Department while investigators began trying to locate his mother.
Police Chief Bry Layrisson said officers tried to make the boy comfortable while they worked to track down Edmonds.
“We had him here for quite some time, so we went and got him some McDonald’s and put on some cartoons for him,” Layrisson told the Louisiana Radio Network.
Eventually, investigators were able to identify Edmonds as the boy’s mother and locate her roughly 60 miles away in Harvey, Louisiana, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans.

She was taken into custody without incident.
As detectives looked deeper into what had happened earlier that day, they discovered the laundromat was not the first place where Edmonds had allegedly attempted to abandon the boy.
According to police, Edmonds had earlier driven to a cemetery and tried to leave the child there. However, the boy managed to get back into the vehicle before she was able to drive away.
Authorities say Edmonds then attempted to leave him again at a nearby farm.
It remains unclear exactly what happened during that attempt, but police say the boy ultimately remained with his mother until the final stop at the laundromat — where witnesses reported seeing her drive away and leave him behind.
Police say investigators asked Edmonds about why she allegedly abandoned her son, but she did not provide an explanation.
“She never acknowledged any reason for why she abandoned the child,” Layrisson said.
He added that during questioning, Edmonds never asked investigators whether her son was safe or how he was doing.
“At no time did she ask the detectives if her son was okay,” the chief told the outlet.
Authorities say the boy is currently safe and doing well following the ordeal.
Meanwhile, Edmonds was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office jail, where she is being held without bond.
Cases involving child abandonment are treated seriously by law enforcement because of the risks children face when left alone, particularly in unfamiliar or unsafe locations.
Police have not released additional details about the boy’s living situation prior to the incident or whether other family members are now caring for him.
For now, investigators say their priority was ensuring the child’s safety after a series of alleged attempts by his mother to leave him behind in places where he could easily have been harmed or lost.
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors review the case against Edmonds.
