An Indiana woman has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after a late-night fight at a rural bonfire ended with another woman dead, authorities say.

Samantha Mayhew, 33, was arrested following the death of Kiersten Moore after the two women allegedly got into a violent altercation early Saturday morning in Owen County, according to the Owen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Mayhew is currently being held at the Owen County Security Center on a $30,000 bond.

According to a probable cause affidavit cited by the Bloomington-based newspaper The Herald-Times, the confrontation occurred around 12:30 a.m. at a bonfire gathering on a property along Private Road 525 West.

Witnesses told investigators that tensions escalated when Mayhew confronted Moore with a personal question about why she did not have custody of her child.

Shortly after the exchange, the two women began fighting.

Witnesses reportedly described Mayhew as the aggressor during the altercation.

According to investigators, Mayhew grabbed Moore by the hood of her sweatshirt during the fight. The struggle caused both women to fall toward a nearby pile of rocks.

Authorities also learned that Mayhew may have placed Moore in a chokehold during the fight, according to the affidavit.

As the confrontation unfolded, others at the gathering attempted to intervene.

One witness told police that Mayhew was seen on top of Moore during the altercation, and that someone else may have injured Mayhew while trying to pull her off the victim.

When deputies with the Owen County Sheriff’s Office arrived in response to reports of a fight, they encountered Mayhew walking along a nearby road.

Officers noted that she had a large cut on her cheek and blood on her face and clothing. Investigators also reported that she smelled strongly of alcohol and displayed what they described as an “abusive attitude.”

According to the affidavit, Mayhew made several statements to officers about the incident.

“They were trying to get her for that girl not breathing,” she allegedly said.

Investigators say she also made remarks such as “the b— started it,” “I don’t know, she came at me,” and “I did this.”

Witnesses also told police that Mayhew appeared heavily intoxicated during the incident.

One person reportedly told investigators that Mayhew was “f— up” on alcohol and possibly other substances.

Meanwhile, deputies found Moore unconscious at the scene.

Authorities noted that she did not appear to have any obvious external injuries when they first discovered her.

A LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service ambulance waits at the LaPorte County government maintenance facility for an insurance inspector to examine it after the ambulance’s driver pulled into the path of a Center Township Fire Department truck Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025, while attempting a U-turn on U.S. 35 outside LaPorte after the two vehicles had been called off an emergency call they had been responding to.

Emergency responders transported Moore to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday, but officials say the exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding Moore’s death while investigators continue their work.

“Please do not post speculations, theories, opinions, or rumors out of respect for the victim and her family,” the agency said.

Mayhew appeared in court for an initial hearing on Monday.

She is scheduled to return to court on April 16 as the investigation into Moore’s death continues.

Authorities say the case remains under review as they await final autopsy results and continue gathering evidence related to the fatal altercation.
