A New York City Department of Education employee has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a deadly Bronx shooting that left a father of several children dead after a birthday celebration.

Police say 26-year-old Naya Brown was taken into custody Tuesday, more than a month after 44-year-old Keon Gill was gunned down on a Bronx street during the early morning hours of Jan. 26.

The shooting happened shortly before 3 a.m. on West 242nd Street as Gill and his brother were leaving a restaurant where they had gathered to celebrate Gill’s birthday, according to police and local reports.

What began as a night of celebration quickly turned into chaos.

Authorities say Gill was shot in the chest during the confrontation and died from his injuries. His 35-year-old brother was also struck by gunfire and suffered a wound to the knee. Police said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Investigators believe the shooting followed an argument outside the restaurant involving Gill, his brother and several suspects.

Brown is the second person arrested in connection with the case.

Earlier, on Feb. 1, police arrested 37-year-old Pernell Warren of the Bronx and charged him with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Authorities have not yet revealed exactly what role Brown allegedly played in the shooting. Sources familiar with the investigation say she does not appear to be the person who pulled the trigger.

However, prosecutors believe she was involved in the violent encounter that ultimately led to Gill’s death.

A third suspect — described as a man — is still being sought by investigators.

Police have not released additional details about the suspect or what specific actions led to Brown being charged with murder.

Gill, who lived in Middletown in New York’s Hudson Valley, has been remembered by loved ones as a devoted father whose life revolved around his children.

Family members say the loss has devastated those closest to him.

“His world was his kids,” the mother of his children told News 12 in an earlier interview. “They were his life.”

The tragedy has also raised questions about Brown’s professional background.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Brown has worked as a project manager supporting children and families for the New York City Department of Education since March 2024.

The arrest has added another unsettling dimension to the case, as investigators continue piecing together how the confrontation escalated into deadly gunfire.

Police say the argument that erupted outside the restaurant ultimately led to the shooting that killed Gill and wounded his brother.

Police lights activated on an Evansville Police Department vehicle.

Authorities have not disclosed what sparked the dispute.

As the investigation continues, detectives are still searching for the third suspect believed to have been involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family continues to grapple with the sudden loss of a man they describe as deeply devoted to his children and family.

For them, what was supposed to be a birthday celebration has become a devastating memory.

With two arrests now made and another suspect still at large, police say the case remains active as they work to determine exactly how the deadly encounter unfolded on that Bronx street.
