What should have been one of the happiest days of a young family’s life ended in violence and heartbreak inside an Alabama hospital.
Authorities say 24-year-old Precious Johnson was shot and killed by her husband just moments after giving birth to their child. The gunman, identified as 19-year-old Kynath William Terry Jr., then turned the weapon on himself in an apparent murder-suicide.
Police in Homewood, Alabama, responded to reports of gunfire Sunday, March 1, at the Women’s Center of Brookwood Hospital. When officers arrived, they discovered two people inside the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later identified the victims as Johnson and Terry, a young married couple whose lives had just taken a devastating turn.
According to local outlets including WVTM, WBRC and AL.com, Johnson had just delivered a baby shortly before the shooting occurred. A coroner’s report cited by WVTM stated that she was shot multiple times.
No one else was injured in the incident, and police say they believe the case is a murder-suicide.
The tragedy unfolded inside a place meant to celebrate new life — a maternity ward where families typically gather to welcome newborns.
Details about what led up to the shooting remain limited, but Terry’s mother told reporters that the couple had been experiencing marital problems. She said she had no indication her son was capable of such violence.
The shocking nature of the incident has rattled both hospital staff and the surrounding community.
Danne Howard, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, said the violence underscores a troubling reality: even places meant to offer safety are not immune from tragedy.
“There are a few places in our world where we should feel safe — at church, our hospitals, and our homes,” Howard told WBRC. “Unfortunately, things happen and we do not feel safe anymore.”
Howard emphasized that hospitals across Alabama take security seriously and are committed to protecting both patients and staff while continuing to provide care.
Still, the incident has left many grappling with the emotional fallout.
Within hours, what should have been a joyful milestone — the birth of a child — became a devastating crime scene.
While officials have not released details about how Terry brought the gun into the hospital, the case raises new questions about safety protocols inside medical facilities and how violent incidents can occur even in controlled environments.

At the center of the tragedy is a newborn child who has now entered the world under unimaginable circumstances.
Johnson, described by those who knew her as a young mother excited to welcome her baby, died just hours after giving birth. Terry’s death shortly afterward closed the chapter on a relationship that relatives say had been strained.
Police have not released additional details about the child or who will care for the baby moving forward.
For now, investigators say the case appears to be an isolated domestic violence incident that turned deadly in one of the most unexpected places.
