A troubling phone call set off a chain of events that ended in heartbreak inside a Sarasota home, where a 27-year-old woman was found shot to death and her partner later died from what investigators say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on Feb. 22 after a concerned individual requested a welfare check on the couple. The caller had reportedly received “unusual and worrying” statements from a friend earlier that day and feared something was wrong.
It was not immediately clear whether the call came from Lily Z. Yard or her partner, 40-year-old Jordan M. Rouff.
When deputies arrived at the Sarasota residence, they discovered Yard deceased inside the home. Authorities said she had been shot in the head.
Rouff was also found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head that investigators later determined was self-inflicted. He was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Investigators say the couple had been in an on-again, off-again relationship and had recently moved in together. The sheriff’s office has not publicly identified a motive, but authorities told local outlets including FOX 13 and Tampa Bay 28 that the case is being investigated as domestic in nature.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. Officials have not released additional details about what may have prompted the alarming phone call that triggered the welfare check, nor have they indicated whether there had been prior reports of disturbances at the home.
For neighbors, the violence shattered what had appeared to be an ordinary weekend in a quiet Sarasota community. For law enforcement, it marks another case where a domestic situation appears to have escalated with irreversible consequences.
Domestic-related shootings often unfold behind closed doors, leaving few outward signs of turmoil until tragedy strikes. In this case, it was a friend’s concern — prompted by words described as unusual and worrying — that led deputies to the scene.
Authorities have not indicated whether anyone else was present at the home at the time of the shooting. The investigation remains active as detectives work to piece together the timeline of events.

As family and friends process the loss, the sheriff’s office emphasized that the case underscores the importance of taking alarming statements seriously and seeking help when warning signs appear.
