A Minnesota mother has been found guilty of a crime prosecutors described as “horrific and unthinkable” — the stabbing death of her 6-year-old son followed by a house fire that left his 5-year-old brother trapped inside.

Jennifer Marie Stately, 37, was convicted on Feb. 26, just over two weeks into her trial, for the March 15, 2024 killings of her sons, Remi and Tristan, at their home on the Red Lake Nation reservation.

According to court records, Stately stabbed Remi in the chest before pouring gasoline and lighter fluid throughout the home and igniting multiple fires. Investigators said some of the flames were deliberately set near exits, blocking any possible escape.

Tristan, just five years old, died from smoke inhalation as the fire spread.

A Scene Authorities Called “Unthinkable”

Law enforcement officials painted a grim picture of what unfolded that night. FBI Special Agent in Charge Rick Evanchec said the two boys “had no chance at survival while in the care of the one person who should have kept them safe.”

After setting the fire, prosecutors said Stately fled the scene with her 3-year-old son, Ethan. An Amber Alert was issued but later canceled when a motorist spotted her roughly 150 miles from the home.

Authorities also revealed troubling details about Ethan’s condition. Prosecutors said he was covered in sores and had scabs on his feet severe enough to make it difficult for him to stand.

Defense Claimed Mental Illness

During the trial, Stately’s defense team argued that she believed the home was “demonized” and attempted to present an insanity defense. The jury ultimately rejected that argument.

Originally, Stately faced state-level charges including child neglect and assault. However, those charges were dropped because the Red Lake Reservation falls outside state court jurisdiction. She was later federally indicted on murder and arson charges in May 2024.

The jury found her guilty on five counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson.

A Community in Mourning

Family members described Tristan in his obituary as an “outgoing, spirited little boy.” Remi’s death was caused by a stab wound to the chest, while Tristan succumbed to smoke and carbon monoxide inhalation, according to court documents.

Officials say the conviction brings some measure of accountability, though the loss remains devastating for the Red Lake community.

“We all witnessed the devastating aftermath,” said Drew Evans, Superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. He expressed hope that the verdict would provide at least some sense of justice for the boys’ loved ones.

Under Minnesota law, first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. Stately has not yet been formally sentenced.

For many, the case leaves haunting questions about how such a tragedy could happen — and underscores the profound responsibility entrusted to parents to protect their children.
