Nearly four weeks after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Arizona home, law enforcement officials are preparing to return the property to her family — a solemn milestone in a case that has gripped the nation and left loved ones suspended between hope and heartbreak.
Federal agents were seen Wednesday at the Catalina Foothills residence outside Tucson, the same home that has been sealed as an active crime scene since Nancy disappeared in the early morning hours of February 1. Authorities now say they no longer need to keep the house restricted, and sources told NBC News that it will soon be turned back over to her family.
The renewed activity at the property was tied to that transition, officials said, not a major break in the investigation.
Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, is believed by investigators to have been abducted or kidnapped. Her disappearance triggered an immediate and massive search effort involving the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Authorities have emphasized that she depends on daily medication and warned there could be “fatal” consequences if she is unable to access it.
Despite weeks of searching, officials have not publicly identified a suspect.
On February 10, investigators released video showing a masked, armed man appearing to tamper with Nancy’s doorbell camera the morning she vanished. The haunting footage became a focal point in the case, raising urgent questions about who may have been outside her home in the hours before she disappeared.
Recent reports from ABC News and CNN suggested the suspected intruder may have approached the residence on another occasion prior to the alleged abduction. However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department pushed back on speculation, stating Monday that the images circulating publicly do not include date or time stamps.
“There is no date or time stamp associated with these images,” the department said. “Therefore, any suggestion that the photographs were taken on different days is purely speculative.”
As the investigation stretches on, the volume of public response has been staggering. More than 23,000 calls have poured into the FBI tip line. According to NBC News, 750 of those tips came in within just 12 hours after Savannah Guthrie posted an emotional Instagram video Tuesday announcing a $1 million reward for information leading to her mother’s recovery.
“Every hour and minute and second and every long night has been agony,” Savannah said in the video, her voice breaking. “We need to know where she is. We need her to come home.”
She acknowledged the painful possibility that her mother may already be gone but said the family “still believe in a miracle.”
Investigators continue to pursue what they describe as “all viable leads.” DNA evidence has been collected from Nancy’s yard and from additional search locations. The samples have been submitted for forensic analysis, but so far have not yielded results.
Neighbors remain unsettled. Aldine Meister, who lives nearby, told Fox News Digital that she saw a suspicious young man walking through the neighborhood roughly two weeks before Nancy disappeared.
“He just didn’t fit,” Meister said.
