What should have been a routine late-night food delivery ended in tragedy on Chicago’s West Side.

Daniel L. Figueroa, 28, was delivering food near Loretto Hospital around midnight Monday when he was attacked in what police describe as an apparent carjacking. By the end of the night, he would be dead — struck and killed by the very vehicle taken from him.

On Tuesday, authorities announced that Montoya Perry, 33, a suburban Chicago woman, has been charged with murder and vehicular hijacking in connection with the killing.

According to police, Perry “participated in taking a vehicle” from Figueroa around 12 a.m. near the hospital, located in the Austin neighborhood. Figueroa had been delivering food to a doctor when the confrontation occurred.

Investigators say that during the hijacking, Figueroa was struck by the fleeing vehicle. His body was later discovered on the street in the 5500 block of West Flournoy Street near South Lotus Avenue.

He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died. Authorities indicated he may have suffered a fatal head injury.

Figueroa, who lived in Westmont, was working as a delivery driver for Uber at the time of the incident. The company confirmed his status as a driver and released a statement expressing condolences.

“We’re incredibly saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with their family and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginably difficult time,” Uber said. “We’ve reached out to police and will assist them however we can.”

For Figueroa’s family, the loss is almost impossible to process.

“He had a family that loved him, he was a good kid,” his father, Carlos Figueroa, said. “He was too young to die. A parent isn’t supposed to bury their children.”

The killing has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangers faced by gig workers who often make deliveries late at night in unfamiliar neighborhoods.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Loretto Hospital said the institution was aware of the “tragic incident” and is fully cooperating with law enforcement.

“On behalf of Loretto Hospital, our prayers and condolences go out to the individual’s family and loved ones,” the spokesperson said. “Our focus remains on supporting the safety, health, and well-being of the community we serve during this difficult time.”

Authorities have not released further details about the moments leading up to the alleged carjacking or whether additional suspects may be involved. Perry now faces serious charges that could carry a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
