A quiet Florida neighborhood turned into a crime scene Monday afternoon when a 54-year-old mother allegedly stabbed her daughter’s boyfriend — and then her own daughter — claiming she was trying to “free” him from what she described as a simulated reality.

Sandra Kegley was arrested on charges of first-degree attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after police say she launched a knife attack inside a Pinellas Park home on Feb. 23.

According to a news release from the Pinellas Park Police Department, officers responded to a 4:30 p.m. call reporting a stabbing. When they arrived, they found 23-year-old Eric Smith and Kegley’s daughter, Kyrsten Bleattler, suffering from multiple stab wounds and cuts.

Authorities say Bleattler was injured while trying to intervene and stop the attack on her boyfriend. Both victims sustained what officials described as non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

What unfolded next, according to local reports, stunned even seasoned investigators.

Kegley allegedly told authorities that she attacked Smith in an attempt to “free” him from the “simulation,” describing life as an “illusion.” The arrest report, cited by local outlets including WFLA and Fox 13, states that Kegley believed she was helping him escape from a false reality.

Police have not released additional details about what may have led up to the violent encounter or whether there were prior warning signs before the attack.

The chilling language — invoking the idea that life is a “simulation” — echoes a fringe but increasingly visible online belief system that suggests reality is artificial or manipulated. In this case, however, investigators say that belief allegedly turned violent.

Kegley was taken into custody at the scene and is currently being held in the Pinellas County Jail on a $500,000 bond, according to jail records.

Police tape off a crime scene, Saturday, July 6, 2024, on the 2600 block of Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, Ky.

Neighbors in the area expressed shock that such a violent incident could erupt so suddenly. Pinellas Park, a city in central Pinellas County, is generally considered a quiet residential community, making the brutality of the alleged attack all the more jarring.

The case now moves into the court system, where prosecutors will determine how to proceed on the attempted murder charge. If convicted of first-degree attempted murder, Kegley could face decades in prison.

Meanwhile, Bleattler and Smith are recovering from their injuries — physical wounds that may heal more quickly than the emotional trauma of violence inside what should have been a safe family home.

Authorities have not commented on whether a mental health evaluation will be requested as part of the legal process. The investigation remains ongoing.
