An 18-year-old Ohio woman is facing multiple charges after police say she drank hand sanitizer, punched an officer during her arrest and later shattered a jail holding cell window.
Jade Cain, 18, was taken into custody last week after officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at a home in Canton, Ohio. What began as a routine call quickly spiraled into a chaotic arrest captured on police body camera footage.
According to video obtained by Cleveland’s 19 News, officers encountered Cain and her boyfriend, Alan King, shortly after arriving at the address. Cain appeared disoriented during the exchange.
“What’s your issue?” one officer can be heard shouting at her in the footage.
“Jade,” Cain responds.
When asked again what was wrong, she once again replies, “Jade.”
“She’s drunk, I don’t know where she got it from,” a voice can be heard saying in the background.
Police later determined that Cain had consumed hand sanitizer. Authorities did not specify how much she drank, but products commonly contain between 60 and 95 percent ethyl alcohol — far stronger than beer or wine.
Officers on scene decided to detain Cain and escort her to a patrol vehicle. As they guided her toward the car, she dropped to the ground, flopping in apparent protest as officers attempted to lift her up and secure her in the back seat.
Once inside the cruiser, Cain began complaining that her shoe had fallen off. Moments later, according to police and the body cam footage, she struck one of the officers in the face.
“Alright, she can go to jail for assaulting a police officer,” an officer says on the recording before shutting the vehicle door and transporting her to the Stark County Jail.
The chaos did not end there.
Authorities say that once at the jail, Cain managed to slip out of her handcuffs. She then allegedly punched through the window of her holding cell, shattering it. That action led to an additional vandalism charge.
Cain is now facing charges of assaulting a police officer and vandalism. Her bond has been set at $50,000, according to 19 News.
Police indicated that officers had previous encounters with Cain and her boyfriend. In the footage, one officer can be heard expressing frustration.
“I thought we established this last time,” the officer says, though authorities did not elaborate on prior incidents.
The video concludes with officers walking Cain through Stark County Jail as she continues to speak about her missing footwear.
“Come on, I want my boot,” she says as she is escorted inside.
While the case has drawn attention for its chaotic sequence of events, health experts warn that the most alarming detail may be Cain’s alleged ingestion of hand sanitizer.

America’s Poison Centers caution that drinking hand sanitizer can be extremely dangerous and, in severe cases, deadly. Because the product often contains high concentrations of ethyl alcohol — sometimes up to 95 percent — ingesting even small amounts can lead to alcohol poisoning.
Symptoms can include confusion, vomiting, drowsiness and difficulty breathing. In extreme cases, individuals may experience respiratory arrest, which can result in coma or death.
The National Capital Poison Center advises anyone who has ingested hand sanitizer to seek immediate medical attention.
Authorities did not disclose whether Cain required medical treatment following her alleged consumption of the product.
