In one of his final filmed interviews before his death, actor Eric Dane reflected candidly on his enduring love for Rebecca Gayheart, offering insight into their unconventional relationship years after their separation.

Dane, best known for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died Feb. 19 at age 53 following a battle with ALS. In an interview that aired Feb. 20 as part of Netflix’s Famous Last Words, he spoke openly about Gayheart, whom he married in 2004 and separated from in 2017 after more than a decade together.

Though they had been living apart for years, Dane made clear that his feelings for Gayheart never faded. He described their bond as deeply rooted, explaining that while they no longer wanted to share a home, their love for one another remained strong. He said he could not imagine ever loving another woman as profoundly as he loved her.

The couple share two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, and Dane emphasized that Gayheart’s role as the mother of his children would always connect them. He described their relationship as organic and meaningful, shaped by years of shared experiences.

Dane recalled feeling certain about Gayheart from the moment they met in 2003. He remembered telling a friend of hers that he intended to marry her, despite the fact that she was then engaged to someone else. Four years later, that prediction came true when they tied the knot in Las Vegas after less than a year of dating.

While Dane spoke fondly of their early romance, he also took responsibility for the breakdown of their marriage. He acknowledged that Gayheart was more willing to fight for the relationship, while he struggled with perseverance when challenges arose. Using a metaphor, he suggested that when problems surfaced, his instinct was to abandon ship rather than repair it, whereas Gayheart was more inclined to keep working through difficulties.

Despite their split, the two maintained a close partnership centered on co-parenting. Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, citing irreconcilable differences, but the divorce was never finalized. In March 2025, amid Dane’s battle with ALS, she moved to dismiss the divorce petition. Shortly before Dane publicly shared his diagnosis, Gayheart described them as best friends and effective co-parents who had found a formula for remaining a family.

She has said she does not view the end of their romantic relationship as a failure, but rather as a meaningful chapter in their lives. Together for 15 years, they built a family and lasting memories, something she considers a success regardless of marital status.

Over the years, the couple weathered public scrutiny, including a 2009 scandal involving a leaked private video. Dane later addressed the incident, stating he had no regrets and viewed it as part of his life experience. The couple pursued legal action at the time and reportedly reached a settlement.

In recent years, Dane and Gayheart had been seen vacationing together with their daughters, sparking speculation about a reconciliation. While they never confirmed a romantic reunion, their public appearances suggested a close and supportive partnership.

In his final interview, Dane’s reflections underscored the depth of his affection and gratitude for Gayheart. Though their marriage evolved into something different, he made clear that she remained the defining love of his life.
