The arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in the United Kingdom has drawn an emotional response from the family of Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who accused him for years of sexual abuse tied to Jeffrey Epstein and died by suicide last year.

In a statement issued Thursday shortly after the arrest, Giuffre’s two siblings and their spouses said the development brought them a measure of relief. “At last,” they wrote.

“Today, our broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty,” the relatives said.

They also praised the police agency involved. “On behalf of our sister, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, we extend our gratitude to the UK’s Thames Valley Police for their investigation, and the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor,” the statement continued.

In pointed language aimed at the royal once known publicly as Prince Andrew, the family added: “He was never a prince. For survivors everywhere, Virginia did this for you.”

Giuffre had long alleged that Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell trafficked her to Andrew for sex at least three times, beginning when she was 17. Andrew repeatedly rejected the claims, a dispute that culminated in him losing his royal titles and even his home.

The legal fight in the United States ended with a settlement in New York: in February 2022, Andrew paid more than $12 million to resolve Giuffre’s sexual abuse lawsuit while maintaining that the payout was not an admission of wrongdoing.

Giuffre, whose allegations helped bring renewed scrutiny to Epstein’s network and Maxwell’s role in it, died by suicide last year, her family said.
