A burst of gunfire on a Flint neighborhood street last week ended in the loss of two lives — a 34-year-old expectant mother and, hours later, the baby she delivered after the attack — prompting city leaders to renew urgent calls for public cooperation.

Police say Ashley Williams was shot multiple times Tuesday night on Browning Avenue, near Hemphill Road and South Saginaw Street. She was rushed for medical care and gave birth following the shooting, according to Flint Police Chief Terrance Green. The newborn was transported to a hospital but died roughly a day later, city officials confirmed.

No arrests have been announced, though investigators say they are actively pursuing leads. Green indicated detectives believe the shooter was not a stranger, suggesting Williams may have known the person responsible. Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect.

The killings mark Flint’s fifth homicide of the year — a sharp increase compared with the same point last year, when the city had recorded one homicide. For Green, the number itself is alarming, even before considering the circumstances.

“One homicide is more than enough,” he said, describing himself as deeply troubled by the trend.

According to police, none of this year’s homicides appear to be random. Green characterized them as deliberate, targeted acts — many tied to domestic disputes. In response, the department is adjusting its approach, including plans to increase patrol presence in neighborhoods where violence has been most persistent.

Even so, Green emphasized that enforcement alone will not be enough. He urged anyone with knowledge of Tuesday’s shooting to come forward, arguing that community cooperation is essential if the city hopes to slow the pattern of gun violence.

The investigation into Williams’ death — and that of her newborn — remains ongoing.
