A 20-year-old woman was arrested in Moorhead, Minnesota, after police say she threatened a man with a metal snow shovel and damaged property at a nearby bus stop.
Officers were dispatched to an apartment complex around 6:33 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, following a report of a woman knocking on doors inside the building despite not living there. A resident told authorities that the woman, later identified as Olivia Jan Hammer, knocked on his door at approximately 6:30 a.m. When he left for work about five minutes later, he said she was still in the hallway.
According to a criminal complaint reviewed by local media outlet KVLY, the man told investigators that Hammer began following him as he made his way out of the building. While in the lobby area, she allegedly grabbed a metal snow shovel. The man reported that he quickened his pace in an effort to distance himself from her.
The situation escalated once the pair reached a nearby bus stop. The complaint states that Hammer allegedly made verbal threats, including saying she was going to hit and kill the man. At the bus shelter, she is accused of swinging the shovel and shattering a glass panel of the structure while the man avoided being struck.
The victim told police that Hammer also pointed the shovel at him and jabbed in his direction multiple times. He said he feared for his safety during the confrontation.
When officers arrived at the scene, they located Hammer near the bus stop. According to the report, she became uncooperative as officers attempted to take her into custody. Authorities allege that she struck an officer in the upper arm and shoulder while trying to pull away during the arrest.
The complaint further notes that Hammer made statements to law enforcement about having crashed into a tree and said she had been searching for her children every day. Additional context about those remarks was not immediately available.
Hammer was taken into custody and formally charged the following day. She faces multiple charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon, property damage, and obstructing legal process.
If convicted, she could face a sentence of up to seven years in prison and fines totaling as much as $14,000.
The incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed.
