A complex multi-state investigation has reached a grim conclusion after authorities discovered the body of a Wisconsin woman in Michigan, following the arrest of her boyfriend in Minnesota. The search for Gabriella Cartagena, 24, began earlier this month when her worried family alerted police in Marinette, Wisconsin, to her sudden disappearance.

The case quickly escalated on February 5, when Cartagena’s mother recounted a distressing phone conversation from the previous night during which her daughter was overheard pleading, “Please don’t shoot me. I’m sorry.” This chilling statement sparked an urgent law enforcement response, prompting officers to examine several locations in Marinette, particularly Red Arrow Park. Marinette Police Chief John LaCombe explained Thursday that investigators detected “signs of possible blood and other disturbances,” indicating the park may have been central to their inquiry.

Despite living together in Marinette, police believe Cartagena’s boyfriend, Robert Chilcote, played a role in her disappearance and possible murder at the Wisconsin location, even though her remains were ultimately located across state lines in a wooded section of Menominee County, Michigan. Authorities tracked Chilcote’s movements in the days following Cartagena’s vanishing, leading them to Minnesota where they apprehended him. According to law enforcement, several firearms were recovered from Chilcote’s vehicle at the time of his arrest, though Chief LaCombe stated, “I don’t know if those were the weapons used in this incident or not.”

Currently, Chilcote faces charges for fleeing from police in a motor vehicle and for being a fugitive wanted by another state. Marinette County District Attorney DeShea Morrow confirmed her office is preparing to extradite Chilcote back to Wisconsin while awaiting autopsy results, which are expected to determine additional charges in connection with Cartagena’s death.
