John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s romance captivated the public from the moment it began, turning the couple into one of the most talked-about pairings of the 1990s — and making their tragic ending all the more devastating.

Kennedy Jr., the son of President John F. Kennedy, was widely viewed as American royalty. Handsome, charismatic, and considered one of the most eligible bachelors of his era, he attracted constant attention, with many believing he was destined for a future in politics. When he met Carolyn Bessette in the early 1990s, fascination with his love life only intensified.

According to reports, Kennedy Jr. first crossed paths with Bessette in 1992 while she was working in sales at the Calvin Klein store in Manhattan. At the time, there was no public romance. But by 1994, their relationship became official, quickly turning into a media obsession. Their chemistry was evident to those closest to the Kennedy family. Carole Radziwill, who was married to Kennedy Jr.’s cousin Anthony Radziwill, later said she immediately sensed Bessette was different from the other women Kennedy Jr. had dated. She recalled that the connection between them felt instant and unmistakable.

After about a year together, Kennedy Jr. proposed on July 4, 1995 — a patriotic and symbolic date that matched the high-profile nature of his life. The couple married the following year, in 1996, in a quiet ceremony held at a small church on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Despite the secrecy, their wedding further fueled the public’s fascination, with many viewing Bessette-Kennedy as a modern version of Jacqueline Kennedy.

While the pair appeared glamorous and deeply in love, their relationship was also dogged by rumors of tension. Over the years, they were occasionally photographed arguing in public, sparking speculation that life under relentless media scrutiny was taking a toll. Tabloids frequently suggested trouble behind the scenes, painting their marriage as strained despite their continued appearances together.

In 1998, they attended the wedding of friends Betsy Reisinger and Kenan Siegel in Miami, where witnesses described them as still visibly affectionate. Reisinger later reflected that the couple seemed joyful and deeply in love at the time, remembering them as a pair who were “in love with life.”

By 1999, there were signs that Kennedy Jr. and Bessette-Kennedy were trying to strengthen their marriage. Later reports indicated they had been attending therapy and were hopeful about starting a family, suggesting that despite any friction, they were committed to working through their issues. Author Christopher Andersen has claimed that by the end of their lives, they had reached a sense of peace and progress, addressing whatever struggles existed privately.

Tragedy struck on July 16, 1999, when Kennedy Jr. piloted a plane that crashed off the coast near Martha’s Vineyard. He was 38 years old. Carolyn was 33. Her sister, Lauren Bessette, was also killed in the crash. The shocking loss ended one of the most iconic love stories of the decade and left the nation grieving a couple who seemed destined for an enduring legacy.

Their relationship continues to be revisited in pop culture, including through FX’s 2026 limited series Love Story, which reexamines their romance and the intense spotlight that followed them until the very end.
