Months before her death, Jennifer Strang used her social media platform to call for compassion toward transgender youth — a message that has taken on new weight following this week’s deadly events in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

Strang, 39, was killed Tuesday at her family’s home. Authorities say her 18-year-old transgender son, Jesse Van Rotselaar, carried out the attack before going on to fatally shoot several others at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The violence ended when Van Rotselaar died from what officials described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the aftermath, a July 2024 Instagram post written by Strang began circulating online. In it, she identified herself as a “conservative leaning libertarian” and addressed what she viewed as growing hostility toward transgender individuals in digital spaces. Living in a small northern town, she wrote that she hoped the harsh rhetoric she was seeing online did not reflect genuine hatred.

Strang urged readers to educate themselves and avoid spreading divisive commentary. She expressed concern about the emotional toll of online hostility, especially on young people, writing that hateful rhetoric can have devastating consequences. She also referenced the mental health struggles facing transgender youth and implored others to reconsider how their words might affect vulnerable children.

Authorities say Tuesday’s shooting began at the family residence, where Strang and her 11-year-old stepson were found dead. Investigators allege that Van Rotselaar then went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where he fatally shot six people — a female teacher, three female students and two male students.

In total, eight victims besides the gunman lost their lives. Approximately 25 others were injured. While several sustained serious wounds, hospital officials indicated most injuries were not considered life-threatening, and patients are receiving medical treatment.

The attack is being described as the deadliest mass shooting in modern Canadian history, sending shockwaves through the small town and across the country. As investigators continue examining the circumstances leading up to the tragedy, Strang’s earlier words calling for empathy and understanding have resurfaced as part of the broader conversation unfolding nationwide.
