Testimony in a Pennsylvania courtroom this week painted a disturbing picture of family conflict, alleged planning, and a fatal shooting that prosecutors say was anything but spontaneous.
Melissa Fox-Beacom, 51, is on trial alongside 20-year-old Matthew Jason Bates, both accused of arranging the December 11, 2023 killing of Fox-Beacom’s 71-year-old mother, Alice Robson. The two face charges including homicide, criminal conspiracy, solicitation, and abuse of a corpse.
On Wednesday, jurors heard from Fox-Beacom’s former partner, Ace Vavrek, who described prior conversations in which Fox-Beacom allegedly talked about wanting her mother dead. Vavrek testified that she discussed different ways it could happen, though he said he initially dismissed the comments as unserious. “I kind of just thought she was crazy,” he told the jury.
Prosecutors argue the tensions between Fox-Beacom and Robson had escalated in the months leading up to the killing. Court records show that the Westmoreland County Court had granted guardianship of Fox-Beacom’s son — who has significant care needs — as well as a daughter, to Robson and her husband. Robson had also secured a protective order against her daughter.

Investigators allege that on the day of the shooting, Bates was at Robson’s home working on a vehicle. Later, according to the district attorney’s office, he left with Fox-Beacom and met up with 20-year-old Robert Jack, who was reportedly dating Fox-Beacom’s daughter at the time. The trio then returned to the house.
Prosecutors say Fox-Beacom urged the two men to kill her mother. Authorities allege Robson was shot twice in the head and her body was later concealed beneath a crawl space under the rear porch. Investigators also say attempts were made to clean blood from inside the home.
At trial, the jury heard testimony that Fox-Beacom allegedly told Jack, “We need you to put a fat cow down.”
Robert Jack has been charged in connection with the killing and is believed by investigators to be the individual who fired the shots. However, he has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and is expected to testify against Fox-Beacom and Bates. The status of any potential plea agreement has not been disclosed, and his case remains pending.
Additional testimony focused on the murder weapon. Prosecutors allege that Bates supplied the firearm used in the shooting. Jason Bates, Matthew’s father, told the court he had discovered his .22-caliber revolver was missing. That weapon was later recovered from a lake after Jack reportedly directed authorities to its location.
The trial continues as jurors weigh testimony about the alleged motive, the family’s custody dispute, and whether the state has met its burden in proving that Fox-Beacom orchestrated her mother’s killing.
