What began as a routine pickleball match at a Florida country club ended in chaos, arrests and criminal charges after a heated dispute allegedly escalated into a physical brawl involving dozens of people.
Anthony and Julianne Sapienza were arrested following the Feb. 8 altercation at Spruce Creek Country Club in Port Orange. According to an arrest affidavit, deputies from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11:10 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a “physical fight in progress” that reportedly drew more than 20 individuals into the fray.
Investigators say the confrontation began during a doubles pickleball game between the Sapienzas and another couple. Tensions flared after Anthony Sapienza accused his male opponent of violating a rule related to the “kitchen,” the seven-foot no-volley zone near the net designed to prevent aggressive smashes. The disagreement quickly turned verbal, with insults allegedly exchanged on the court.
According to court documents, as the game concluded and the opposing couple began walking away, Anthony allegedly shouted, “Your wife is a c–t.” The remark reportedly prompted the husband to respond, telling Anthony not to speak about his wife in that manner.
Authorities allege that Anthony then lunged at the man and punched him in the face. The affidavit states that he also struck the victim with a pickleball paddle, causing visible injuries and “significant bleeding.” When the injured man’s wife rushed toward him, a witness told deputies he saw Anthony push her to the ground.
A 70-year-old bystander who attempted to intervene told deputies he was punched in the face by Anthony, resulting in a bleeding nose and knocking him to the ground. According to the witness account, Julianne Sapienza then entered the confrontation, yelling and striking the man as well.
When deputies arrived, one of the alleged victims was found with blood coming from his nose and scratches on his forehead, according to the affidavit. By that point, the Sapienzas had left the country club.
Authorities later located the couple at their home in Ponce Inlet. Both were taken into custody and charged in connection with the incident. Julianne Sapienza faces a felony battery charge involving a person 65 years of age or older. Anthony Sapienza was charged with two counts of battery against a person 65 or older, as well as one count of aggravated battery causing bodily harm.
Because some of the alleged victims were seniors, the charges carry enhanced penalties under Florida law.
A spokesperson for the Office of State Attorney R.J. Larizza confirmed that the couple made their first court appearance on Feb. 9. According to court records, both Anthony and Julianne Sapienza have entered not guilty pleas.
The case has drawn attention due to the dramatic nature of the alleged incident, transforming what is typically considered a lighthearted recreational sport into a scene of violence at a private club. Authorities have not indicated whether additional individuals involved in the broader altercation will face charges.
For now, the Sapienzas remain at the center of a legal battle stemming from what investigators describe as a disagreement over a game rule that spiraled into a physical confrontation with serious consequences.
