Support for the widow of James Van Der Beek poured in at a staggering pace, as a fundraiser launched after his death surged past $1 million in just 11 hours.
The GoFundMe campaign, created to assist his wife Kimberly and their six children, initially set a goal of $500,000. Donations flooded in almost immediately, pushing the total to the half-million mark within hours. Organizers quickly raised the target — first to $700,000 and then to $1 million and then to $1.3 million — a milestone that was reached in less than half a day as thousands of contributors responded.
Van Der Beek, best known for playing Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, died Tuesday at age 48 after a prolonged battle with bowel cancer. He is survived by Kimberly and their children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah.
Shortly after news of his passing was shared publicly, Kimberly posted the fundraiser link on Instagram, explaining that friends had created the page to help offset the financial strain of his extensive medical treatment. “With gratitude and a broken heart,” she wrote.
The campaign description notes that the costs associated with cancer care depleted the family’s savings and that they are working to remain in their home while providing stability and continued education for their children.
Van Der Beek had spoken openly in recent months about the financial toll of his diagnosis. After revealing in November 2024 that he was battling cancer, he began selling memorabilia from projects including Varsity Blues, where he played a high school quarterback. He said at the time that 100 percent of his net proceeds would go toward families facing cancer-related financial hardship, including his own.

He had also auctioned keepsakes from his years on “Dawson’s Creek,” telling People magazine that the recent unexpected turns in his life made it clear the time had come to part with items he had long stored away.
In the months leading up to his death, friends and former colleagues rallied around him. Several original “Dawson’s Creek” cast members — including Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Joshua Jackson — reunited in New York for a one-night charity event benefiting his family. Award-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda participated in place of Van Der Beek, who was too ill to attend.
The rapid outpouring of donations this week reflects the lasting connection many fans and peers felt to the actor — and the determination of supporters to help his family navigate the difficult road ahead.
