Federal investigators are widening their focus in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, as the case enters what authorities describe as a critical phase.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed during an interview on Hannity that multiple individuals are currently under review. His comments followed the public release of surveillance images showing an unidentified person outside Guthrie’s Tucson-area home on the night she was last seen.
Patel indicated that the investigation remains fluid, noting that officials are carefully balancing transparency with the need to protect the integrity of their work. He characterized the individuals being scrutinized as “persons of interest,” explaining that investigators must either rule them out or determine potential involvement before drawing conclusions.
The renewed public attention came after federal authorities distributed both still images and video footage depicting a figure near the residence on January 31. Concern escalated the following morning when Guthrie reportedly failed to arrive at a friend’s home for a scheduled virtual church gathering.
Meanwhile, a man identified only as Carlos briefly became part of the inquiry after law enforcement conducted a traffic stop and search related to a tip. The stop occurred in Rio Rico, about 65 miles south of Tucson. Carlos was detained for several hours but released without charges.
Family members said officers searched the home of Carlos’ mother-in-law after receiving information suggesting Guthrie might be there. She told reporters she cooperated fully and insisted nothing connecting her family to the disappearance was found. Carlos also denied any involvement, stating publicly that he hoped authorities apprehend whoever is responsible.
Local law enforcement sought to dispel unrelated speculation as well. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos clarified that a medical helicopter seen leaving the Rio Rico area earlier in the week had no connection to the case.
Investigators are also examining two ransom-style communications that were reportedly sent to media outlets. One message allegedly demanded a substantial Bitcoin payment in exchange for Guthrie’s release, though officials have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the claims.
As of midweek, no arrests have been announced, and authorities have not identified any suspects. The search for answers — and for Guthrie herself — continues.
