A Georgia woman has pleaded guilty to assault and battery after throwing coffee on a McDonald’s employee during a heated confrontation at a Michigan restaurant, an incident that was captured on video and widely circulated online.
Casharra T. Brown, 49, appeared in Saginaw County District Court on Feb. 9 alongside her attorney, Paul M. Purcell, and entered a guilty plea to the sole charge against her. The misdemeanor offense carries a potential sentence of up to 93 days in jail and a fine of as much as $500. Brown’s plea was accepted by District Judge Elian E.H. Fichtner, who will determine her sentence at a later date.
During the court hearing, Brown acknowledged that the incident took place on the morning of Nov. 4 at a McDonald’s located on Dixie Highway in Buena Vista Township. She confirmed that she became involved in a dispute with a female employee and admitted to throwing a cup of semi-warm coffee in her direction. Brown emphasized that the liquid struck the employee’s outer clothing and that no physical injuries resulted from the act.

According to police, the altercation began after Brown placed an online order and requested a refund for two sandwiches. Video recorded by another customer shows the final moments of the exchange between Brown and the restaurant’s female manager at the front counter. In the footage, the manager attempts to calm the situation and hands Brown a coffee, while Brown insists she had been waiting for more than an hour. When the discussion stalled, the manager told Brown to have a good day and turned away.
At that point, Brown removed the lid from the coffee and threw it at the manager, striking her on the back and arm. The employee screamed as the liquid made contact. Brown then left the restaurant. Authorities later identified her after the video spread online and members of the public provided tips to police.
Brown told the court that responding officers’ body camera footage showed the employee reported she was not burned or injured. She said the manager’s main concern was that Brown not return to the restaurant.

Following the guilty plea, Judge Fichtner ordered Brown to report to the Probation Department for a pre-sentencing interview, which will be used to help determine an appropriate punishment. The judge cautioned Brown that failing to attend the interview would have serious consequences and would not be rescheduled.
Before the hearing concluded, Brown’s attorney requested a modification to her bond conditions. Brown had been visiting family in Michigan at the time of the incident and was barred from leaving the state while the case was pending. Her attorney said this restriction had already caused her to miss a court appearance related to a traffic matter in Tennessee. The judge agreed to amend the bond, allowing Brown to return to Georgia, but made clear that she must come back to Michigan in person for sentencing.
Brown told the court she understood the requirement and committed to returning when ordered. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
