A night of skating at a Glendale roller rink allegedly spiraled into shocking violence after a jealous ex-girlfriend is accused of ambushing another woman with a roller skate, beating her to the ground, and then boasting about it on Instagram.
According to police, 25-year-old Justic Cofield attacked the victim inside Great Skate on Jan. 25, allegedly to “send a message” to her former boyfriend. Investigators say the victim was targeted simply because she was friends with Cofield’s ex.
A probable cause statement obtained by Law&Crime paints a brutal scene. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Cofield holding two roller skates, one in each hand, as she sneaks up behind the victim. Without warning, police say she swung one of the skates into the woman’s head with enough force to knock her to the floor. Once the victim was down, Cofield allegedly jumped on her and continued the assault as bystanders tried to intervene.
The injuries were severe. The victim reportedly suffered two swollen black eyes, facial bruising, a concussion, and significant dental damage. Police say one of her front teeth was chipped and the crown from a molar was knocked out. Photographs documenting the injuries were later shared with investigators.
What stunned police even more, according to court documents, was what came next. Authorities say Cofield took to Instagram to brag about the attack, directly messaging the victim and posting about it on her story. In those communications, police allege she openly admitted to striking the woman with a skate and continuing to beat her, framing the assault as intentional retaliation rather than an accident.
The probable cause statement also alleges that Cofield escalated her threats online, claiming that if the incident had happened outside the rink she would have “used a pole,” which police say is slang for a firearm.
When officers later located Cofield, she reportedly tried to deny involvement, telling police, “That’s not me,” before allegedly taking off running. She was eventually taken into custody and transported to a Glendale police interview room, where the chaos allegedly continued.
Police say Cofield abruptly grabbed a chair and repeatedly hurled it into the secured interview room door with such force that the chair broke apart and the door was damaged. Even after officers re-entered, she allegedly continued kicking furniture into the door and resisting commands. Officers report that she tensed her arms, pulled away during handcuffing, and had to be escorted to an isolation detention room.
Cofield has been charged with aggravated assault, destruction of public property, and resisting arrest. Police say she has prior arrests related to DUI and violating court orders in Phoenix and Tempe.
As of this week, Cofield was being held on bonds totaling $151,000. A next court date has not yet been announced.
