In a striking show of party unity, every Democratic member of New York’s congressional delegation is lining up behind Gov. Kathy Hochul, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the nation’s most influential progressive voices.

Ocasio-Cortez is expected to formally announce her endorsement Friday alongside the state’s other 18 House Democrats, ahead of the New York Democratic Party’s convention in Syracuse, where Hochul is poised to secure her spot on June’s primary ballot. The endorsement bloc includes Rep. Tom Suozzi, who previously ran against Hochul in the 2022 gubernatorial primary, underscoring just how thoroughly the party has consolidated around the incumbent.

The joint endorsement, first reported by The New York Times, frames Hochul as both a stabilizing force and a counterweight to national Republican politics. In a statement, New York’s House Democrats praised her for confronting the affordability crisis while casting the Trump administration and MAGA Republicans as agents of chaos.

The move is notable not just for its unanimity, but for who is included. Ocasio-Cortez’s support comes despite clear ideological differences between the progressive left and Hochul’s more centrist governing style. It follows a similar endorsement from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, another progressive ally of Ocasio-Cortez, signaling that the left has decided unity matters more than ideological purity in this race.

That decision leaves Hochul’s chief primary challenger, Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, increasingly isolated. Delgado has attempted to position himself as a more aggressive progressive, calling for higher taxes on the wealthy and bolder economic reforms. But his campaign has struggled to gain traction, and the endorsements from Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani may represent a decisive blow.

Another key indicator of Delgado’s weakening position came earlier this week, when Attorney General Letitia James, a major figure within the progressive-aligned Working Families Party ecosystem, endorsed Hochul. While the Working Families Party itself has not yet weighed in, James’s backing sends a powerful signal about where the institutional left is heading.

Hochul, for her part, leaned into the national political stakes. In a statement, she thanked New York’s congressional Democrats and said they are “on the front lines holding Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans accountable for the chaos, extremism, and division coming out of D.C.”

The endorsements suggest a broader strategic calculation by New York Democrats: with national politics increasingly volatile, the party is prioritizing cohesion and electability over intraparty battles. For Hochul, it is a clear victory. For Delgado, it may mark the moment his challenge effectively ran out of oxygen.

What remains is not much suspense about the primary’s outcome, but a revealing snapshot of a party choosing discipline over dissent as it heads into a consequential election year.
