A confrontation at a North Carolina elementary school escalated into a criminal case after a mother allegedly attacked a pregnant school resource officer when she was not immediately allowed to see her child, authorities said.
Khadeeja Muhammad, 44, has been charged with five misdemeanors, including assault on a pregnant woman, assault on a government official, resisting a public officer, second-degree trespassing, and disorderly conduct. She was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center and given a $1,000 secured bond, according to court records.
The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 29 at John Small Elementary School, located in the city of Washington near North Carolina’s Atlantic coast. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said Muhammad entered the school’s front office demanding to see her daughter, prompting staff to call the school resource officer.
According to the sheriff’s office, the pregnant officer informed Muhammad that the school was verifying whether she could see the child due to a pending custody issue. Authorities said the officer was familiar with Muhammad and knew she did not currently have custody of her daughter. Court records reviewed by Law&Crime state that the North Carolina Division of Social Services had previously instructed Muhammad not to contact the child.
Officials say Muhammad became increasingly agitated, yelling profanities inside the office and refusing repeated orders to leave. When the officer radioed for assistance, additional units responded to the scene. Deputies allege Muhammad continued to escalate the situation, throwing water from a bottle at staff, resisting commands, and becoming combative as officers attempted to remove her from the building.

During the physical removal, authorities said Muhammad kicked the school resource officer in the stomach. The sheriff’s office noted that neither the officer nor her unborn child was injured during the incident.
A judge has since recommended that Muhammad undergo a mental health evaluation, according to court records. No date has been set for her next court appearance.
School officials did not report any injuries to students, and authorities said the situation was brought under control after Muhammad was removed from the campus.
