Bridgerton’s glittering ballrooms could turn to heartbreak as the series races toward the dramatic conclusion of season four—at least, if author Julia Quinn’s ominous warning is anything to go by. Loyal fans of the Regency romance, brace yourselves: there might be a tragedy simmering just beneath those perfectly arranged curls and pastel silks.
The rumor mill is in overdrive ahead of the final batch of episodes dropping February 26, and Julia Quinn herself just poured lighter fluid on the speculation. The esteemed creator dished to Us Weekly in a February 5 chat, “I can just say, get your tissues ready, because it’s rough.” She didn’t stop there, doubling down on the emotional stakes, recalling a set visit that left her stirred: “When I visited the set, they were filming scenes and I saw a scene that was—at the same time incredibly joyful and just heart-wrenching—so, yeah, you’re gonna need tissues for part 2.” Clear your calendars and stock up on Kleenex—something big is coming.
Tension ratcheted up further in Netflix’s recent trailer for part two: even Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell)—usually the picture of pastel perfection—swapped her signature hues for a dramatic black ensemble. Is a funeral on Mayfair’s horizon? The answer, eagle-eyed fans believe, might be hiding right in Quinn’s beloved novels.
Turning back the pages: in ‘To Sir Phillip, With Love’, we see Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) and Phillip Crane (Chris Fulton) reeling after the tragic demise of his wife, Marina Crane (Ruby Barker). But heartbreak isn’t reserved for their relationship: in ‘When He Was Wicked’, Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) wades through grief following the death of her husband John Stirling (Victor Alli). Francesca’s tale takes a twist of fate as she later finds solace with John’s cousin Michael Stirling, who’s been reimagined for the Netflix world as Michaela (Masali Baduza)—a game-changing entrance in the explosive season three finale.
How’s Francesca handling this storm of emotions? According to Hannah Dodd herself, it’s complicated. “Michaela is a massive tornado in Francesca’s life,” she told E! News in January. “Something happened in Scotland—there was something there that I think Michaela is a presence that’s quite confronting for Francesca.” Sounds like Mayfair’s next scandal is brewing!
As if things weren’t tense enough, John’s cousin decided to stroll into town just as the newlyweds hosted a cozy family dinner, throwing Francesca’s hard-won happiness into upheaval.
“John and Francesca have got closer and closer, and really worked hard on their relationship,” Dodd revealed. “[They] really faced some quite difficult conversations and grown really close, and they’re finally in this really, really good place.”
But domestic bliss doesn’t last long in the ton. “She’s opened their home—it’s such a gorgeous metaphor, like letting everybody in, being proud of her relationship,” Dodd gushed. “And then Michaela shows up again. She knows it’s going to be carnage and it’s going to throw her off.”

So who, if anyone, will be saying goodbye in this much-anticipated installment? Audiences will just have to tune in when the drama explodes in part two. For more tantalizing morsels from behind the scenes, fans can scroll TikTok for glimpses of the cast blowing off steam: Luke Thompson (Benedict) and Claudia Jessie (Eloise) engaging in playful sibling rivalry, or catching Eloise and Penelope Featherington mending fences between takes. But make no mistake—the countdown to heartbreak is ON in the world of Bridgerton.
