Arizona authorities now believe the mother of Savannah Guthrie was abducted from her home while she slept.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS News on Monday that investigators no longer believe 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie left her home willingly when she vanished late Saturday night from the Catalina Foothills area outside Tucson.
“I believe she was abducted, yes,” Nanos said. “She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”
At a press conference earlier in the day, the sheriff said evidence gathered at the scene now indicates a crime occurred inside the home.
“At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night,” Nanos said. “Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction.”
Nanos emphasized that Nancy Guthrie’s physical limitations make it highly unlikely she could have left on her own.
“She is very limited in mobility. We know she didn’t just walk out there,” he said. “There are other things at the scene that indicate she did not leave on her own.”
Although the case is being treated as involving a “vulnerable adult” due to her age, the sheriff stressed that mental decline played no role in her disappearance.
“This is not dementia related,” Nanos said. “She is as sharp as a tack. Her family wants everybody to know this is not somebody that just wandered off.”
Authorities also warned that the search is especially urgent because Nancy relies on daily medication. Nanos said going more than 24 hours without it could be fatal.
Savannah Guthrie shared a faith-centered message asking the public to help bring her mother home.
“Thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy,” Guthrie wrote. “Raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment.”

Guthrie’s colleagues have amplified the plea. Former Today co-host Hoda Kotb shared Nancy’s photo and the sheriff’s department phone number on Instagram, urging anyone with information to come forward. Al Roker also posted his support, writing that he and others were praying for Nancy’s safe return.
Investigators continue to search the area using multiple resources, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Office immediately.
