A Nebraska woman has been charged after a 12-year-old boy in her care was found weighing just 47 pounds and hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

Angela Lowe, 46, was arrested after bringing the child to an emergency room in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Jan. 12, according to local reports citing police.

Medical staff immediately raised alarms. A nurse reported suspected child neglect after observing that the boy was severely malnourished, too weak to lift himself, and unable to speak. Investigators said his core body temperature was approximately 80 degrees, dangerously below normal. Authorities noted that the average 12-year-old boy weighs around 90 pounds.

The child was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Omaha, where doctors diagnosed him with septic shock and pneumonia. Investigators believe the boy had been neglected, starved, and tortured for several months based on his physical condition and additional injuries observed during treatment.

Doctors initially feared the child would not survive more than a few days. As of Thursday, he remained in critical but stable condition in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Police lights are activated on a squad car Saturday, May 28, 2022, in the parking lot of the Hard Rock Rockford Casino in Rockford.

Lowe now faces felony charges including child abuse, first-degree assault, and false imprisonment. Authorities said the boy was placed into state custody on Jan. 19. Lowe’s guardianship has been removed and she is prohibited from contacting him.

She was arrested at her home and booked into the Lancaster County Jail. Her bond was set at 10 percent of $750,000. Court records also prohibit Lowe from having contact with anyone under the age of 19.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine how long the alleged abuse occurred and whether others may have been aware of the child’s condition.
