A quiet neighborhood in central Oklahoma has been left devastated after a 49-year-old woman was found dead inside a trash bin at her home — a discovery made only after a neighbor overheard one of her teenage sons accuse the other of killing her.

According to police, officers were called to a home in the Cascata Falls neighborhood of Logan County on Wednesday, Jan. 28, after a neighbor reported a disturbing confrontation between two teenage boys in the backyard. The neighbor told authorities she had not seen their mother for several days and became alarmed when one boy allegedly accused the other of murdering her.

When officers arrived, they discovered the body of Spring Weems, 49, inside the family’s trash bin, according to local reports citing police.

Following interviews with the teenagers and the neighbor, authorities arrested one of Weems’ two adoptive sons and charged him with first-degree murder. The other teen was taken into custody and is being held at the Canadian County Juvenile Detention Center, police said. Local outlets reported that the teen charged in the case is a freshman in high school.

“This is just a terrible case,” said Hunter McKee, speaking to local media. “Nobody deserves to die as this woman did.”

Police tape off a crime scene, Saturday, July 6, 2024, on the 2600 block of Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, Ky.

Investigators with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said the investigation remains ongoing. McKee told reporters that authorities are still working to determine a motive and the circumstances surrounding Weems’ death.

“What we have so far is that the woman did sustain injuries that are consistent with homicide at this time,” he said.

The killing has shaken the tight-knit community, where neighbors say nothing like this has ever happened before.

“It’s a close-knit group, and it’s a neighborhood where something like this has not happened,” McKee said. “It left a lot of people in complete shock.”

Friends and neighbors described Weems as deeply caring and community-minded. One close friend told local television station KOCO that she was someone who “would go above and beyond for the cause.”

Another neighbor, Garland Hall, said the entire neighborhood is struggling to process the tragedy.

“Everybody’s traumatized,” Hall said. “Disbelief, just shattered, heartbroken — a lot of the people here in the neighborhood just can’t believe it.”

Hall urged the community to keep the family in their thoughts. “I would ask everyone to pray,” he said. “Pray for that family, because they’re shattered, and pray that God would comfort us during this time.”

Authorities have not released further details about the teens involved or the exact cause of death as the investigation continues.
