A 20-year-old Florida beauty school student was shot and killed outside her campus this week in what police say was an apparent murder-suicide involving her former boyfriend.
The victim, Aileen Martinez, was killed Tuesday, Jan. 24, outside the Aveda Institute in Davie, according to local law enforcement. Authorities said Martinez was confronted by a 25-year-old man who had previously been in a relationship with her.
Police have not publicly identified the shooter. He was transported to a hospital after the shooting and later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.
Martinez was a cosmetology student at the Aveda Institute and was also deeply involved in music. According to her family, she had studied at a Miami music school for the past four years and frequently performed with bands at local events.
“She loved rock n’ roll, thrift shopping, playing computer video games, and discovering new makeup tricks,” her family wrote in a GoFundMe set up to help with funeral and related expenses. “Her favorite color was jade green, which symbolizes peace, calm, love, and harmony — all traits that represent Aileen.”

Martinez was the oldest of three siblings and shared a close bond with her family. She often played music with her younger brother, relatives said.
The GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $50,000 as friends, classmates, and community members rally around the family in the wake of the killing.
