Two men are facing murder charges after an Oklahoma mother was killed in a late-night sledding accident that police say involved impaired driving and a deadly chain of events on a dark road.
Makayla Mitchell, 31, was riding on a sled being towed behind a car when the rope connecting the sled to the vehicle snapped, bringing both to a stop in the roadway around 11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, according to a statement from the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Moments later, a second vehicle traveling behind the first car struck Mitchell. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said both drivers involved were evaluated on site and allegedly showed “signs of impairment.” Officers obtained blood draw warrants for both men, and the tests were completed before arrests were made.
Angel Walzier, 22, was identified as the driver of the first vehicle that had been towing the sled. James Kirk, 24, was driving the second car that struck Mitchell. Both men have been charged with second-degree murder and aggravated DUI, police said.
Jail records show Walzier is being held on $5 million bail. It is not yet clear whether either suspect has entered a plea or retained legal counsel.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Mitchell’s loved ones have turned to the public for help. A GoFundMe campaign created in her name seeks donations to cover expenses and support her surviving daughter.
“Makayla’s life was cut short in a senseless accident that has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled,” the fundraiser reads. Family members described her as a devoted mother and a “vibrant soul who lived for her family.”
