A late-night home invasion in a quiet northeast Houston neighborhood has turned tragically deadly, sending shockwaves through the community after a 72-year-old woman was shot and killed in a dramatic shootout with her alleged assailants.

Police have slapped one of the suspects, a 38-year-old woman, with capital murder charges in a crime that residents describe as both terrifying and heartbreaking.

It all unfolded in the early hours of Monday, January 26, 2026. According to the Houston Police Department, the tranquility of the 4000 block of Lockwood Drive, just a stone’s throw from Calvacade Street, was shattered around 1:30 a.m. when two masked intruders allegedly broke into a home.

The suspects, later named by law enforcement as Tajauna Thomas, aged 38, and Richard Mouton, 34, reportedly forced their way inside. What they didn’t expect? Their target wasn’t about to go down without a fight.

According to police, the elderly woman—whose name hasn’t yet been released to the press—chose to stand her ground. In a scene straight out of a Hollywood thriller, both sides exchanged gunfire in a desperate struggle for survival. When the smoke settled and law enforcement arrived on the scene, all three—Thomas, Mouton, and the courageous homeowner—had suffered gunshot wounds.

Emergency medics from the Houston Fire Department rushed to the scene, but sadly, they confirmed the 72-year-old woman had died before she could be taken to the hospital. Her attempt to defend her residence ended in tragedy, and the house quickly became the focus of a homicide investigation that has gripped the city.

While Thomas has been booked on capital murder charges and taken into police custody, Richard Mouton’s fate remains uncertain. As of Tuesday afternoon, officials confirm that Mouton is still under medical care, his condition undisclosed, and that charges have not yet been filed against him.

The circumstances behind the break-in remain fuzzy. Was this a premeditated attack? Did the suspects intend to target the elderly woman, or was it a random act of violence? Police have so far not named a motive and are keeping their cards close to their chest as the investigation heats up.

Crucially, officials noted that additional people were present inside the house at the time of the harrowing ordeal. Authorities have refused to elaborate, sparking speculation about what those witnesses might have seen—and what secrets might still be hiding behind the home’s shattered windows and police tape.

The usually peaceful stretch of Lockwood Drive has been left reeling. Neighbors, rattled by the night’s events, say they never expected anything like this to happen on their street. “You always hear about these things on the news, but you never think it’s coming to your front door,” said one local resident, who asked not to be named out of fear for their safety. Candles and flowers now sit outside the bullet-scarred home, a makeshift memorial for a woman described by those who knew her as both tough and kindhearted.

Outpourings of grief and support have poured in from across Houston as word of the attack spreads. Social media lit up with messages honoring the slain senior, with many calling her a hero for doing her utmost to protect her home and those inside.

The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division is urging anyone who can provide insight into what happened that night to contact investigators directly at 713-308-3600. For those preferring anonymity, tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers by dialing 713-222-TIPS (8477). Authorities hope that fresh leads could unlock lingering mysteries about what sparked the confrontation—and if others might be involved.
